A fuel-injected motorcycle that cranks after a tip-over but will not start may be doing exactly what its safety system was designed to do. Many bikes stop fuel or ignition after detecting a turnover and require a defined key cycle before restart. But a fall can also move the kill switch, side stand, lean-angle sensor, connector, fuel pickup or wiring, so repeated cranking is not a reset strategy.
If the normal restart procedure fails, a compatible scanner can show codes, freeze data and supported interlock states. Make the fallen motorcycle safe
Switch ignition off and move the motorcycle away from traffic and ignition sources if this can be done safely. Stabilize it on suitable ground. Check the rider first, then inspect for fuel, oil, coolant or brake-fluid leakage. Do not start an engine that may have lost oil, ingested liquid or damaged a fuel line.
Look for a jammed throttle, bent handlebar controls, damaged brake/clutch lever, pinched wiring, broken case, crushed exhaust, displaced airbox, loose battery and wheel or steering damage. Smell for raw fuel but do not create sparks.
If the bike was upside down, submerged, struck hard or cannot be inspected safely, transport it. A spinning starter is not proof the engine is mechanically safe to run.
Perform the model’s normal turnover reset
Read the owner manual. On some motorcycles, the lean-angle sensor shuts down the engine and a complete ignition-off then ignition-on cycle clears the turnover state. The kill switch may also need to be returned to run. Other models use different sequences.
Turn power off for the required interval, place the motorcycle upright, verify neutral and controls, then power on once. Watch the warning light and listen for the normal fuel-pump prime. Do not flip the key rapidly or crank continuously.
If it starts, let it idle only long enough to inspect for leaks, abnormal noise, smoke and warning indications. The normal reset solved the shutdown state; it did not certify that fall damage is absent.
Build the crank-permission chain
Because the starter operates, some interlocks have granted crank—but start permission may use additional logic. Record neutral lamp, gear indication, side-stand position, clutch-switch response, run/stop switch, immobilizer lamp and brake input where applicable.

Inspect parts on the side that struck the ground. A switch housing can look intact while its wiring is pulled. Do not bridge interlocks; that removes the evidence and can let the motorcycle move unexpectedly.
Listen for fuel-system permission
At a clean key-on, listen for the expected pump prime. No prime can indicate a retained safety shutdown, fuse/relay issue, damaged switch, pump connector, low voltage, controller decision or a pump fault. Confirm what this model normally does; not every pump sounds the same.
Measure battery voltage during key-on and crank. A fall may loosen a terminal, and repeated attempts can discharge a small battery quickly. The starter may turn while voltage drops below the threshold needed for reliable ECU, coil or injector operation.
Check fuel leaks, tank venting and whether the pickup was exposed or debris shifted. Do not open a hot pressurized fuel system. Use the service procedure for pressure and volume testing.
Read states without bypassing interlocks
Connect the correct adapter with ignition off unless instructions say otherwise. Identify the exact model and scan engine, immobilizer and other relevant modules. Save current and history codes and freeze data before clearing anything.
Look for supported live states corresponding to run switch, side stand, gear, clutch, lean angle and immobilizer. Compare the displayed state with the physical motorcycle. A sensor mounted crooked or a connector partly released may report a plausible but wrong state.
Use actuator tests only when the bike is stable, no fuel is leaking and the function is supported. A commanded pump test can separate controller communication from the normal permission path, but it should not be used to force a damaged system to run.
Inspect the lean-angle sensor as an installed part
Locate the sensor by service information. Confirm its arrow or orientation, rubber mount, bracket and connector. A tip-over can dislodge a sensor or a previous repair may have left it loose. Do not glue, bypass or permanently fix it in an artificial position.
Compare sensor data or the specified electrical test upright and through only the permitted movement. Some systems store a fault that clears after a proper key cycle; others indicate an open/short or implausible state that requires wiring diagnosis.
If the sensor and reset are normal, resist replacing it because the event involved a fall. Continue through command and engine fundamentals.
Move to spark, fuel and compression only when required
Confirm spark with an approved tester and correct grounding; exposed fuel vapor makes improvised spark checks dangerous. Test injector command with suitable equipment and service information. A noid or scope signal proves command, not actual fuel flow.
Check fuel pressure and sample quality as appropriate. A flooded cylinder may require the model’s clear-flood procedure. Inspect plugs for wetness and damage. If liquid may have entered a cylinder, do not keep cranking until hydrolock risk is addressed.
Perform compression or mechanical timing checks if impact, abnormal cranking speed or lack of spark/fuel explanation points there. A fall can damage a case or pickup even though it did not alter engine internals, so let evidence earn the invasive tests.
If the motorcycle briefly starts and dies when put in gear, return to the side-stand, neutral and clutch chain instead of treating it as a fuel-pressure failure. If it never produces one combustion event, compare spark and injector command during cranking. The exact moment permission disappears is often more useful than the final no-start state.
Preserve any bent bracket or displaced sensor before straightening it. A photo of orientation and impact marks can explain an intermittent restart that vanishes once the bike is upright in the workshop.
Verify after inspecting fall damage
Repair the failed link, restore all connectors and guards, and clear codes only after recording them. Perform a normal key-on: confirm warning-lamp sequence, pump prime, neutral/gear display and stable voltage. Start without throttle unless the manual says otherwise.
Inspect every fluid boundary and the impacted side while the engine idles briefly. Test clutch, brakes, steering, throttle return, lights and side-stand engine-cut behavior while stationary and safely supported. A restart is not permission to ride.
Use a walking-speed private-area check only after the mechanical inspection passes. The case closes when the designed turnover reset works, every interlock reports correctly, fuel/ignition permission is restored and no fall damage creates a new risk. The key cycle is a safety-system handshake, not a substitute for examining what hit the ground.
