How to Use the AUTOOL OD720 Oil Extractor and Drainer Step by Step

The AUTOOL OD720 gives a workshop two separate waste-engine-oil paths. It can pull oil through a vehicle-specific extraction probe into its 10 L transparent measuring cup, or collect oil by gravity through its 20 L catch pan. Both paths feed a 70 L storage tank, which is emptied through the drain hose with regulated compressed air. The safest approach is to choose one collection path before setup, keep the engine off, control oil at 40–60°C, monitor both the measuring cup and tank, then use only 0.6–0.8 bar for tank discharge.

Do not mix the three functions together. Vacuum extraction uses the vacuum-generator inlet, 6–8 bar supply air and a 50–65 cmHg vacuum reading. Gravity draining requires a properly lifted and mechanically secured vehicle. Storage-tank discharge is a separate low-pressure operation. Never use OD720 for gasoline, diesel, brake fluid, methanol, ketone or another flammable liquid, and never use the safety valve as a pressure target.

Prepare the vehicle, air supply and waste-oil route

Have the exact vehicle oil-service procedure, approved lift instructions when gravity draining, the correct probe or drain-plug tools, any specified replacement seal, a calibrated torque wrench, gloves, safety goggles and absorbent material. Use clean, regulated shop air capable of the documented 6–8 bar supply range for vacuum generation. Tank emptying needs a separate regulated 0.6–0.8 bar setting, a stable approved waste-oil container and a secured hose route.

Warm the oil only by the vehicle manufacturer’s method, then stop the engine and prevent unintended starting. Keep smoking, sparks and open flames away. Confirm that hot exhaust parts, moving components and electrical connections cannot contact the probe, hose, pan or operator.

Step 1: Confirm the exact OD720 configuration

Check the model label and locate the 20 L catch pan, height-adjustable lifting rod, 10 L measuring cup, measuring-cup valve, vacuum generator and inlet, gauge, extraction hose and probe holder, tank sight window, tank inlet and safety valves, drain hose, 70 L storage tank, handle and braking casters.

Stop: If the valve layout or hardware does not match this configuration, obtain the instructions for that exact machine before connecting air.

Step 2: Choose vacuum extraction or gravity draining

Use vacuum extraction only when the vehicle procedure identifies a suitable extraction tube and confirms that top-side oil removal is appropriate. Use gravity draining when the sump plug is the approved service point and the vehicle can be lifted and mechanically secured.

Completion check: One collection method, its access point and its completion criteria are defined before setup.

Step 3: Confirm the liquid and working temperature

OD720 is for identified waste engine oil within the documented 40–60°C working range. The engine must remain off during operation. Do not extract brake fluid, gasoline, diesel, methanol, ketone, an unidentified liquid or another flammable material.

Stop: If fuel dilution or another contamination is suspected, isolate the liquid under the facility’s hazardous-fluid procedure.

Step 4: Verify cup, tank and receiving capacity

Read the measuring cup and tank sight level before starting. Estimate the vehicle’s oil quantity and leave headroom in both vessels. The 10 L cup and 70 L tank figures are nominal capacities, not permission to fill to their limits.

Common mistake: Beginning a second extraction while oil remains near the cup warning line can overfill the cup before the operator can stop the flow.

Step 5: Inspect every OD720 control and fluid path

Inspect the cup, scale, lid, gauge, measuring-cup valve, vacuum generator, extraction hose, probes, catch pan, lifting rod, tank sight window, valves, check valve, drain hose, fittings, handle and caster brakes. Look for cracks, unreadable levels, loose joints, corrosion, kinks or oil and air leaks.

Stop: Isolate damaged or leaking equipment. Do not tape a hose, bypass a valve or continue with a cracked measuring cup.

Step 6: Assemble the cup, rod and catch pan correctly

Rotate the measuring-cup assembly clockwise onto the tank positioning seat, orient it correctly and lock it. Fit the lifting rod and catch pan clockwise, keep the rod vertical, turn the height mechanism counterclockwise to adjust and clockwise to lock.

Completion check: The cup is locked, the rod is vertical, and neither assembly can rotate, drop or contact a valve when the machine moves.

Step 7: Stabilize the machine and work area

Roll OD720 by its handle, not by the lifting rod, and park it on level floor. Apply the caster brakes. Put on gloves and eye protection, keep the hoses within a controlled area and make sure the operator has a clear exit path.

Stop: Do not operate in a high-temperature, high-pressure, flammable, explosive or traffic-exposed area.

Step 8: Prepare the vehicle’s extraction access

Follow the vehicle procedure for top-side extraction. Open the oil-filler cap or remove the dipstick only when that procedure calls for it, protect the openings from dirt and identify the approved probe route and depth.

Common mistake: Assuming every dipstick tube reaches the bottom of the sump can leave a large quantity of oil behind or trap the probe.

Step 9: Select and connect the correct extraction probe

Choose the vehicle-appropriate probe from the supplied sizes. Check it for damage and connect it securely to the extraction hose. Route the hose without a kink and keep the probe clean before insertion.

Stop: Never force a probe past resistance. Withdraw it and verify the vehicle-specific route instead.

Step 10: Close the cup and extraction valves before applying air

Place the measuring-cup valve in its middle slot, which is the closed position. Close the valve on the oil-extraction hose. Confirm that the tank discharge path is not being pressurized and that the cup has enough free capacity.

Completion check: The cup is isolated for vacuum generation and the probe-side valve is closed.

Step 11: Connect 6–8 bar supply air to the vacuum generator

Connect regulated shop air to the vacuum generator’s air-intake port, then open the air-supply valve. This 6–8 bar supply is for creating vacuum in the measuring cup; it is not the storage-tank discharge pressure.

Stop: If a hose leaks, the cup moves, the gauge is damaged or the supply cannot be regulated within range, close and disconnect the air.

Step 12: Establish 50–65 cmHg of vacuum

Watch the gauge and adjust the vacuum control until the needle is within the manual’s 50–65 cmHg rated negative-pressure range. Let the reading stabilize and listen for leakage before opening the oil path.

Common mistake: Increasing air pressure because extraction is slow can hide a blocked probe and exceed the machine’s documented operating conditions.

Step 13: Insert the probe to the approved depth

Guide the probe through the identified service tube without bending or forcing it. Stop at the vehicle procedure’s depth; do not use the probe as a dipstick or push it against an internal obstruction.

Completion check: The probe is stable, unkinked and routed away from hot or moving parts.

Step 14: Open the extraction-hose valve and monitor flow

Open the hose valve gradually. Watch oil enter the transparent measuring cup, monitor the gauge and check every joint. Reposition the probe only as allowed by the vehicle procedure. Never leave extraction unattended.

Stop: Close the hose valve if the cup reaches its warning line, the flow contains an unexpected liquid, the probe shifts, vacuum becomes unstable or any leak appears.

Step 15: Stop extraction and remove the probe cleanly

At the vehicle procedure’s completion condition, close the extraction-hose valve and isolate the air supply. Allow the hose flow to settle, then withdraw the probe slowly while controlling drips. Wipe it and protect the vehicle opening from contamination.

Completion check: The probe is removed intact, no oil is dripping onto the vehicle, and the removed filler cap or dipstick can be restored correctly.

Step 16: Drain the measuring cup into the storage tank

If the cup contains oil, press and rotate its valve into the top-left or top-right open slot. Watch the oil flow into the tank and stop before the tank approaches its safe capacity. After the cup is empty, the manual allows the cup drain path to remain open during unpressurized standby.

Stop: Close the measuring-cup push-button valve before any later pressurized storage-tank discharge.

Step 17: Lift and mechanically secure the vehicle

Use the approved lifting points, stay within lift capacity and engage every required mechanical lock. Verify stability before anyone or OD720 moves beneath the vehicle. Lower the catch pan for clearance before positioning the machine.

Stop: Never work below a vehicle supported only by a floor jack, hydraulic pressure or an unverified lift position.

Step 18: Position and lock the catch pan

Roll the machine by its handle, apply the caster brakes, release the rod counterclockwise and raise the pan beneath the drain point. Center it for the initial oil stream as well as the final drip, then lock the rod clockwise without letting the pan support the vehicle.

Completion check: The machine cannot roll, the pan cannot drop and warm oil has a clear path into the tank.

Step 19: Remove, drain and reinstall the sump plug

Keep your body out of the oil path, remove the plug with the specified tool and monitor the pan, tank level and floor throughout drainage. When the vehicle procedure’s drain condition is met, inspect the plug and threads, fit the specified seal and tighten to the manufacturer’s torque.

Common mistake: Estimating plug torque or reusing a damaged washer can create a leak after the machine is removed.

Step 20: Lower the pan and complete the vehicle service

Lower and lock the pan, move OD720 clear by its handle, then complete the filter, refill, level and leak checks specified for the vehicle. Restore the filler cap and dipstick and remove the machine before lowering the lift.

Completion check: The vehicle is leak-free and the machine is outside the lift zone.

Step 21: Prepare and pressurize the tank at only 0.6–0.8 bar

Secure the drain hose in an approved receiving container with enough free capacity. Close the measuring-cup push-button valve, oil-discharge valve and tank-inlet valve. Connect a separately regulated air supply to the tank inlet, then open the inlet valve and hold discharge pressure within 0.6–0.8 bar.

Stop: The safety valve’s automatic action above 1.0 bar is emergency protection, not an operating target. If it lifts, isolate the air immediately.

Step 22: Open slowly, isolate air, depressurize and store

After about five seconds of controlled tank pressurization, open the oil drain valve slowly. Monitor the hose, receiving container, tank and fittings until discharge is complete. Cut off the air supply, close the inlet, fully release retained pressure by the approved procedure, then disconnect air. Clean spills, inspect the cup and hoses, dispose of waste oil lawfully and store OD720 dry with the cup protected and rod lowered.

Completion check: The machine has no retained pressure, leak, unsecured hose or oil left near the measuring-cup warning line.

Troubleshoot OD720 without guessing

If vacuum extraction is slow, close the extraction valve and isolate air before checking oil temperature, probe selection, insertion depth, kinks and the vehicle’s approved access path. If gravity drainage is slow, confirm the oil condition and vehicle drain opening rather than adding vacuum. If tank discharge slows, close the drain valve, isolate air and fully depressurize before checking the hose, receiving-container venting or valve position. A cracked cup, unstable gauge, repeated leak, lifting safety valve or blocked internal path requires qualified service.
