A Yaris belt squeal that lasts only a few seconds after a cold start is a short evidence window. More tension is not a universal cure.

Where Toyota provides the belt’s mass, width, free-span length, and target method, a sonic gauge can convert vibration frequency into tension. Record the first thirty seconds

Park safely, set the brake, keep hands and clothing away from the moving drive, and place the phone at a fixed safe distance before the first cold start. Record ambient temperature, overnight soak time, humidity or rain, and whether the A/C, defrost, lights, and blower were on.

Note whether the sound begins with cranking, immediately after the engine catches, or only when an accessory load is applied. Count duration and observe charging warning or temperature indications. Do not reach into the engine bay with the belt moving and do not spray dressing onto it.

Stop the engine if the belt walks off-line, smoke appears, a pulley wobbles, or coolant temperature rises. A squeal can precede loss of charging or coolant circulation.

Check whether the bulletin can apply

Toyota T-SB-0012-15 covers 2006–2015 Yaris vehicles produced before a listed production-change VIN. Confirm the body style, engine, VIN, and current repair information. The bulletin’s condition is engine-compartment squeal during startup; a chirp at every revolution or grinding accessory is a different pattern.

Warranty language in the old bulletin does not establish current coverage. The diagnostic logic remains useful, but a dealer must check today’s VIN record and service status.

Inspect before measuring

With the engine off, key removed, and hot parts cooled, inspect the ribs and back of the belt. Look for frayed cords, scoring, glazing, cracks, missing ribs, swelling, or contamination. Check pulley alignment, foreign material, obvious wobble, and signs of coolant or oil reaching the belt.

Toyota separates three branches: physically damaged belt, physically sound but low tension, and physically sound with tension in specification. A frequency value should never overrule visible damage. Replace or correct the source of contamination according to service information.

Measure the correct free span

A sonic measurement is only as good as its setup. Use the exact span between the specified pulleys, measure span length rather than guessing, enter belt mass and width correctly, and pluck at the defined point. Keep the engine off. Take several readings with the sensor at a consistent distance and reject obvious outliers.

Toyota’s bulletin used a dedicated tension gauge and contains a bulletin-specific tension specification. Follow its current method rather than converting casually between force and frequency. A reading from the wrong span can be precise and still wrong.

Separate low tension from a damaged belt

Tension adjustment and belt replacement solve different findings. Follow Toyota’s fastener, adjustment, and final-measurement sequence. Excessive tension can overload alternator, water-pump, compressor, or idler bearings and may make a noise disappear while shortening component life.

If the belt is glazed or frayed, ask why. Misalignment, seized accessory, fluid, incorrect belt, or previous over-tension can damage a new belt quickly. Do not install a replacement without checking the path it must run.

Keep pulleys, bearings, and contamination in view

With the belt removed only under the repair manual procedure, a technician can assess each accessory for roughness, play, binding, and alignment. Do not run the engine with the belt removed unless Toyota explicitly provides a safe test; water-pump and charging function may be lost.

Load correlation can also guide the branch. A sound that changes with defrost/A/C or electrical load may involve a different accessory demand. Correlation is not a component verdict, but it focuses the inspection.

Write a noise-and-tension handoff

Provide VIN, build information, engine, cold-soak time, weather, video, onset and duration, accessory states, belt brand/part and age, visible condition, contamination, measured span inputs, repeated readings, and recent alternator/water-pump/A/C work. Include whether the sound changes warm.

Ask the shop to confirm T-SB-0012-15 applicability and the exact tension method. “Belt squeals” is vague; “six-second squeal only on the first 40°F start, belt visually sound, specified span below target” is actionable.

Verify after a true cold soak

Warm-shop silence is not proof. After adjustment or repair, verify alignment and tension, then allow a true overnight cold soak and repeat the original start with the same accessory state. Recheck tension after the service procedure’s settling requirement.

The repair passes when the noise no longer returns, the belt tracks correctly, charging and cooling remain normal, and measured tension stays within Toyota’s exact specification. Silence achieved by excessive tension is a failed repair, not a win.
