Decide whether the truck moves at all

Press the brake pedal only while stationary and in a safe place. If it sinks, travels farther than usual, feels spongy, or a red brake warning appears, do not road-test. Look for fluid at the front wheels and beneath the truck without crawling under it.

Fluid on a tire or rotor, a low reservoir, smoke, or loss of braking demands recovery transport. Do not add fluid and continue driving; topping up can hide the leak rate without restoring safety. Brake fluid damages paint, so rinse accidental exterior contact according to vehicle guidance without contaminating brake components.

Run the VIN and campaign gate

W82 identified certain 2021 Ram 1500 DT trucks. FCA’s notice says some otherwise similar vehicles were excluded, and involved status was determined by its VIN system. Check with a Ram dealer and, separately, use NHTSA’s VIN lookup for safety recalls.

Bleed only after the hydraulic repair requires it

W82’s service sequence treats bleeding as part of the caliper replacement, not the way to test whether a piston is cracked. The official procedure specifies how the hydraulic system is isolated, what is replaced, and which front circuits are bled.

Use fresh specified fluid, the correct reservoir adapter, a purged supply hose, and pressure within both vehicle and bleeder limits. Keep the reservoir from running dry and contain waste fluid. Do not apply a generic four-wheel sequence when the campaign provides a particular front-brake process.

Modern brake systems may require scan-tool functions for other repairs, but adding an ABS bleed routine without service direction can complicate the case.

Do not use a firm pedal as the only proof

A pedal can firm up while a slow leak remains. After repair and bleed, hold controlled pedal pressure and inspect every disturbed connection. Confirm reservoir level, warning status, booster operation, and pedal reserve by the Ram service procedure.

Pads or rotors contaminated by leaked fluid need evaluation; wiping the visible surface is not automatically an approved recovery. The campaign repair must not leave a friction or hose-routing problem behind.

Give the dealer a campaign-ready record

Provide VIN, W82 status if known, mileage, exact warning text, pedal description, reservoir level, wheel-side fluid photographs, towing decision, both caliper identification photographs, previous brake work, and whether any fluid was added.
