A coolant stain near the front of a Bronco Sport engine does not automatically condemn the pump. On a 2021–2024 1.5L EcoBoost, Ford TSB 25-2001 opens only when a cooling-system pressure test verifies that the coolant pump is actively leaking. A dry pump sends the diagnosis elsewhere, even if the vehicle has been losing coolant.

The source can be hard to see in a crowded engine bay. The image is supporting evidence: it cannot supply the specified pressure, distinguish old residue from an active leak by itself, flush contamination, or verify Ford’s unusually detailed fill-and-bleed process.

The pump earns replacement only when a cleaned, dry area produces a new trace from the pump under the specified test. If the trace begins higher or never returns, keep looking instead of making the stain vote.

Begin with cold level and a clean witness surface

Check level only after the engine is fully cold and parked level. Record how far it sits below the cold mark, whether the cabin heater has changed, whether a temperature warning appeared, and how quickly previous top-ups disappeared. Photograph the ground, reservoir, and the highest visible stain before cleaning anything.

Never open a hot pressurized system. If the vehicle is overheating, steam is present, or the heater suddenly goes cold while the gauge rises, shut it down safely and arrange a tow. A low reservoir is not an invitation to keep driving; it is evidence that must be connected to a source.

Confirm the 1.5L Bronco Sport scope

Ford’s bulletin covers 2021–2024 Bronco Sport vehicles with the 1.5L EcoBoost. It is not a generic Bronco bulletin and should not be extended to the full-size Bronco, another engine, or a similar Ford cooling system. Confirm engine and VIN before discussing the six-hour-plus repair path.

Pressure-test before calling the stain a pump

Old coolant can dry into a bright crust long after a leak stops. Fluid from a hose or housing above the pump can also run across it. Ford therefore requires a cooling-system pressure test using the current Workshop Manual procedure and asks a binary question: is the coolant pump leaking?

The technician should clean the witness area, connect the correct adapter to a cold system, raise pressure only to the stated limit, and watch long enough for a small leak to develop. Record starting pressure, time, pressure loss, and the exact first wet point. Overpressurizing can damage a system and manufacture a leak that was not present before the test.

Use a small camera only to improve the view

An inspection camera earns its place when direct sight is blocked—not as a substitute for the pressure test. Position it before pressurizing so the probe is not moved around belts, pulleys, fans, or hot surfaces. Keep the lens far enough back to preserve location context; an extreme close-up of one drop can be impossible to identify later.

Take a short sequence: dry baseline, first moisture, and the path as it grows. If the trace descends from above, follow it upward. If only dry residue is visible and no new fluid appears, report exactly that. A camera cannot tell whether a seal leaks only with the shaft rotating, nor can it determine the chemical source from color alone.

Let a dry pump reopen the whole system

Ford explicitly says that a dry pump closes this article. Continue with normal diagnosis rather than replacing it “because these pumps are known for it.” Inspect reservoir and cap, hoses and quick connects, radiator seams, thermostat housing, heater circuit, turbo cooling connections, and evidence at the exhaust or oil.

Timing helps. A leak that appears while warming may be pressure-related; one that emerges after shutdown may follow heat soak; a cold-only loss may involve contraction at a seal. A sweet cabin odor, wet passenger carpet, persistent white exhaust, or unexplained oil contamination belongs in a different branch. The goal is not to make the bulletin fit—it is to account for the missing coolant.

Flush because contamination is part of Ford’s explanation

When the pump leak is proven, Ford attributes it to contamination in the cooling system and requires a defined flush before pump replacement. That is not the same as pouring in a generic cleaner, running the vehicle indefinitely, or power-flushing in both directions. The bulletin points technicians to only the specified initial Workshop Manual flushing steps.

Protect painted surfaces and dispose of old coolant responsibly. Note what comes out: heavy debris, mixed coolant, oil, or stop-leak material may justify additional investigation. The new pump should not be installed into a system whose contamination story remains unexplained, yet the flush must still stay inside Ford’s materials and sequence.

Treat the repeated bleed cycle as part of the repair

After pump replacement, Ford calls for the current draining, vacuum-filling, and bleeding procedure—and says to repeat the named bleed steps a total of ten times for this repair. That instruction differs from the ordinary Workshop Manual direction, which is exactly why it should be written on the work order rather than left to memory.

Air trapped after service can produce fluctuating level, weak cabin heat, gurgling, localized overheating, and a misleading comeback. Vacuum filling can reduce trapped air when the system and adapters are compatible, but it does not prove every pocket has cleared. Monitor temperature and heater output through the full sequence and never treat a temporarily stable gauge as the only confirmation.

Recheck level, pressure, heat, and the repaired witness area

Verify four things independently: the system holds pressure cold, the repaired pump area stays dry, cabin heat remains stable, and coolant level returns to the correct mark after full cooldown. Confirm fans operate as expected and there are no new warning messages or diagnostic codes from disturbed components.

Give the owner the initial pressure result, the visual location of the leak, confirmation that the specified flush and ten-cycle bleed were completed, and a cold-level recheck interval. If the level drops again, do not simply refill it. Return with the same record so a different leak can be found without erasing the evidence.
