The next time the chime sounds, glance safely at the Driver Information Center and warning lamps—do not operate a phone while driving. If the display names brakes, airbag, steering, oil pressure, engine temperature, door/liftgate or another safety condition, follow the owner’s manual and service that message. The GM document covers a random chime without a corresponding DIC message. It must not become a reason to dismiss a real warning. If a passenger can record the cluster, a short video that includes the sound and vehicle state is more useful than trying to recreate the wording later.
Start a one-week chime diary
For seven days, note time, outside temperature, vehicle speed, gear, brake-pedal use, turn signal, steering angle and whether the truck was accelerating, stopping or shifting. Add door and tailgate state, seat occupancy, belt use, cargo on seats, trailer connection, key location and phone/Bluetooth connection. Those details may seem excessive, but many chimes share the same speaker and some are driven by occupancy or communication changes. A pattern such as ‘one chime when shifting into Drive after remote start’ gives a technician a reproducible test instead of a complaint that disappears in the bay.
Record passengers, belts, cargo and phone state
Remove loose items from seats and cup holders for one controlled comparison, then repeat with the normal passenger/cargo arrangement. Confirm every belt is latched as intended and doors, hood and tailgate are fully closed. Disconnect nonessential OBD dongles, dash cameras and phone accessories only after documenting them; aftermarket devices can affect low-voltage or network state. Do not disable a restraint reminder or alter wiring to stop the sound. The point is to change one harmless variable at a time, not to silence a system whose reason has not been identified.

Preserve a full scan before clearing history
Before codes are cleared or the battery is disconnected, request a complete all-module scan with active, pending and history status. Save module names and timestamps or failure records where available. A powertrain-only code reader cannot show the whole body/chassis context. Compare which codes reset immediately after a stable restart with those that remain history. If the chime occurs during the shop drive, mark its time so scan logs can be aligned. A code stored days earlier is context, not automatically the sound source.
Treat U3003:17 as context
PIT6385 noted that some trucks may carry U3003:17 in history. That code label relates to voltage above threshold, but a historical instance does not prove the battery, alternator or a module caused today’s chime. Check which module stored it, the voltage and event data, whether the vehicle was jump-started or charged and whether aftermarket equipment was connected. Service current electrical faults first. Do not replace a battery merely to clear the history, and do not replace a reporting module because it noticed an abnormal supply event.
Check the low-voltage foundation
Test the correct battery type after it is charged and rested as the manufacturer requires. Inspect terminal security and main grounds, compare cranking voltage and charging behavior and look for overvoltage or unstable output with appropriate equipment. A battery health result and charging-system result answer different questions. If both are normal and no current voltage codes return, keep the evidence but move on. An intermittent network or input event can still request a chime even though the battery is healthy.
Compare the event with today’s GM information
GM’s bulletin was issued in 2025 and described engineering investigation, no parts replacement for the isolated pattern and its assessment at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not a permanent promise for September 2026. A dealer or qualified shop should search the current VIN, latest PI/TSB revisions, module calibrations and service messages. Ask the invoice to cite the current document used. If new guidance now identifies a software or hardware route, today’s instruction supersedes the historical wait-and-observe language.
Verify by recreating the same transition
A useful verification drive repeats the transition found in the diary: same passenger state, phone connection, gear change, brake input and approximate temperature, on a safe route. Change one variable and note whether the chime follows. Confirm that no DIC message or safety lamp appears and that all newly serviced voltage or network codes remain clear. If the event cannot be reproduced, return the truck with the event log still active—not with guessed parts. The owner’s next timestamp can move the case forward rather than restart it.
The service counter needs a scene, not just a sound. Keep real warnings in the urgent lane, then give the message-free chime a timestamp, vehicle state and full code record. Check the low-voltage foundation without making one historical code a verdict, and compare the result with current GM guidance. That approach respects the driver’s concern while avoiding a parade of parts that cannot be shown to have requested the chime.
