Save the stored coolant temperature first
Before clearing P0126:00 or running the engine, save coolant temperature, intake-air temperature, vehicle speed, rpm, load, run time, ambient conditions, and fault status. Photograph how long the blue coolant lamp remains on and note heater output at idle versus while moving. The stored coolant value is not today’s cold-soak reading; it is the PCM’s snapshot when the fault criteria were met. Losing it can turn a direct Mazda decision into another full warm-up cycle.
Exclude the turbo engine and P2B61 branch
The bulletin excludes SKYACTIV-G 2.5T vehicles. It also says the procedure does not apply when P2B61:00, coolant control valve circuit range/performance, accompanies P0126:00. Save the entire code list so a quick-reader display does not hide that second gate. A non-turbo badge assumption is not enough—confirm the engine from the VIN/build information. When P2B61 is present, follow current MGSS diagnostics rather than borrowing the thermostat-only repair.
Use the VIN fence before the thermometer
Mazda lists model-specific VIN ceilings and production dates for CX-3, CX-30, CX-5, Mazda3, and Mazda6 applications. Registration date, sale date, and model year do not substitute for the VIN fence. Give the shop the complete VIN and ask it to check the current superseding bulletin. A TSB explains a possible condition and repair; it is not a recall declaration, proof every listed vehicle is affected, or a promise that warranty coverage applies.
Read slow warm-up as a pattern
A thermostat that does not regulate correctly can lengthen warm-up, let the gauge fluctuate, keep the blue low-temperature light on longer or bring it back while driving, and weaken cabin heat—especially at idle. Record the pattern from a true overnight cold soak. Compare scan coolant temperature with ambient before start, then chart the rise at fixed time points without prolonged stationary idling. An implausible sensor signal, low coolant, air pocket, fan issue, or heater-core flow problem can imitate parts of the pattern.
Open the thermostat branch only inside 40–80°C
Mazda uses approximately 40–80°C, or 104–176°F, in the P0126 freeze frame as the next decision. Inside the band, the scoped repair proceeds. Outside it, the bulletin does not apply and MGSS diagnosis continues. Do not convert that band into a universal thermostat test or judge a different vehicle by it. Also confirm the units displayed by the scan tool. A copied Fahrenheit value interpreted as Celsius would send the case down the wrong branch immediately.

Service the coolant control valve without improvising
The repair removes the coolant control valve and replaces the thermostat within it, following model-specific MGSS instructions. Mazda tells technicians to mark the four cover screws and return each one to its original hole because the holes may deform if mixed. This is precision work with coolant handling, sealing surfaces, gasket replacement, torque, and contamination control. Do not pry at a hot assembly or assume the whole valve should be replaced when the current bulletin specifies a thermostat service path.
Pressure-test and refill only after the system is cold
After the mechanical decision is proven and the engine is fully cool, pressure testing can reveal an assembly leak and vacuum filling can reduce trapped air. Use Mazda’s cap adapter, limit, coolant specification, and bleeding sequence. A pressure hold cannot prove the thermostat opens at the correct temperature; vacuum alone cannot prove all air is gone. Inspect cold level, repaired joints, heater operation, and scan temperature together. Never open a hot cap or exceed the cap/system rating.
Verify the first cold drive, heater, gauge, and code state
Begin verification from another genuine cold soak. Confirm coolant and ambient readings are plausible before start, the blue lamp behaves normally, temperature rises smoothly, cabin heat is stable at idle and moving, and the gauge no longer fluctuates. Recheck cold level after the specified cool-down. Preserve the post-repair scan and challenge the original drive condition before clearing the case. A warm heater in the bay is not enough if the original failure occurred twenty minutes into a cold road drive.
The freeze frame is the article’s most valuable piece of evidence because it cannot be recreated after clearing. Save it first, then let Mazda’s three gates—not the familiarity of a slow warm-up—decide whether the thermostat branch belongs to this vehicle.
