P0384 normally sounds like an invitation to test glow plugs and their control circuit. On a specific group of North American Ford 6.7L diesel trucks, however, Ford TSB 25-2515 says the malfunction indicator lamp can illuminate incorrectly with P0384 even though drivability and durability are unaffected. The directed repair is updated PCM and TCM software—not a box of glow-plug parts.

That exception has boundaries. If the truck is outside the bulletin or still has a genuine cold-start complaint after software is current, identified low-voltage circuits may need testing. An AUTOOL BT210 can support bounded 9–30V voltage or continuity checks when Ford’s wiring data defines the circuit and safe test point. It cannot retrieve P0384, distinguish a calibration false flag, reprogram the PCM or TCM, or justify energizing a glow-control circuit.

The decision is a three-part match: exact truck and build scope, normal versus abnormal cold-start behavior, and installed software level. Miss any one of those and a useful OEM exception turns into a risky shortcut.

Write down whether cold starting actually changed

Begin with the behavior, not the code definition. Did the 6.7L crank at its usual speed? Did it start cleanly at the first attempt? Was there prolonged cranking, uneven firing, unusual white smoke, a rough first minute, or a problem only below a certain ambient temperature? Note fuel level, outside temperature, engine coolant temperature before start, and whether a jump pack or charger was used.

Stop repeated cranking if speed falls, cables heat up, smoke appears, or the batteries are being depleted. A calibration bulletin for a normal-running truck is not permission to keep stressing a truck that is showing a genuine starting or electrical problem.

Ford’s bulletin describes an incorrectly illuminated MIL with no effect on drivability or durability. That makes a normal-starting, normal-driving truck a very different case from one that struggles on a cold morning. Hard starting, smoke, abnormal cranking speed, charging-system trouble, or warning messages beyond the MIL deserve ordinary diesel and electrical diagnosis even if P0384 is present.

Do not repeatedly cold-start a truck solely to chase the light. One well-documented true cold start, followed by a complete scan, is more useful than several short key cycles that lower battery state and change the conditions being diagnosed.

Save P0384 and every companion code

Scan the complete vehicle before clearing the MIL. Record P0384 status—current, pending, permanent, or history—plus freeze-frame data, mileage, module software identifiers, and every companion code. Pay attention to battery-voltage, network, temperature-sensor, fuel-system, and other glow-control faults.

P0384 by itself on a normal-running in-scope truck fits Ford’s calibration path more closely. P0384 alongside multiple glow-plug cylinder codes, low system voltage, a failed temperature input, or a real cold-start symptom does not earn the same shortcut. The companion evidence may show that the software bulletin and a separate physical problem coexist.

Match truck, engine, market, and September build fence

TSB 25-2515 applies to North American 2023–2025 F-Super Duty trucks and 2024–2026 F-650/F-750 trucks equipped with the 6.7L engine, built on or before September 25, 2025. Every part of that sentence matters. Similar-looking trucks, another diesel engine, another market, a later build, or a different code require current service information rather than an assumed match.

Confirm the VIN-derived build date and engine, not just the registration year or badge. Then have a Ford-capable system compare the installed PCM and TCM software with the latest applicable calibrations. Model-year range alone does not prove that the truck needs an update; a module may already have been reprogrammed during previous service.

The bulletin is a diagnostic and repair instruction, not a recall declaration. Warranty coverage, campaigns, and owner cost must be checked for the individual VIN with current Ford information.

Understand why a generic code is not the final diagnosis

A generic description for P0384 points toward glow plug/heater control circuit “B” high. That tells you what electrical behavior the controller believes it detected. It does not identify a failed glow plug, relay, harness, controller, or even a physical failure. Software defines the thresholds, timing, and logic that decide when the code sets.

Ford has identified a calibration condition in which the MIL can be requested incorrectly on the scoped trucks. This OEM exception changes the order of work: verify scope and software before opening harnesses or replacing glow components on a truck with normal behavior. It does not erase the generic diagnostic route for every other P0384 case.

This distinction saves two kinds of waste. It prevents good parts from being replaced because the code name sounded specific, and it prevents a real hard-start complaint from being dismissed merely because a calibration bulletin exists. Applicability plus observed behavior decides which path comes first.

Run Ford’s PCM and TCM calibration route

Ford directs technicians to reprogram both the powertrain control module and transmission control module using the latest Ford Diagnosis and Repair System software. This is not a generic code-clear or battery disconnect. Programming requires approved access, stable support voltage, a reliable data connection, the correct VIN session, and completion of every on-screen instruction.

Owners should not interrupt programming by opening doors repeatedly, disconnecting a charger, or cycling the ignition unless instructed. A failed or incomplete flash can create a no-start or communication problem that did not exist before. This is a professional-service step when the required Ford equipment and programming credentials are not available.

Ask the shop to record the original and final PCM/TCM calibration identifiers and the programming result. “Software checked” is vague; “both modules updated from these identifiers to the currently applicable files, with the session completed successfully” is auditable.

Expect temporary shift relearning afterward

The TSB cautions that the transmission strategy may need time to relearn after programming. The truck can exhibit firmer-than-normal shifts for several days while adaptive values rebuild. That expected behavior should be explained at handoff so it is not mistaken for a new transmission failure.

Expected does not mean unlimited. Note the mileage at programming and describe the shift quality before leaving the shop. Moderate, improving firmness during normal adaptation is different from severe banging, slipping, a transmission warning, loss of a gear, or a new code. Report those symptoms promptly rather than waiting indefinitely for them to disappear.

Drive normally and safely; do not use hard acceleration or heavy towing merely to force a relearn. Follow any drive-cycle instructions supplied in the Ford service procedure, especially when the truck’s duty cycle, load, or body configuration makes a generic drive pattern unsuitable.

Test glow circuits only if symptoms or codes remain

If the truck is out of scope, cannot be brought to current calibration, or still sets P0384 afterward, return to evidence-led electrical diagnosis. Start with battery condition and cranking voltage because a 6.7L diesel’s starting system is a foundation for meaningful module and heater-circuit measurements. Then use the VIN-specific wiring diagram and Ford test plan to identify the correct controller, connectors, grounds, and circuit branches.

Do not apply battery power to an unknown glow-plug-control terminal. Low-resistance heater circuits can draw substantial current, and an incorrect jumper can damage wiring or electronics. Passive voltage, voltage-drop, resistance, or current tests must be performed only under the specified key, temperature, and module states. Disconnect control modules where Ford requires it before using an ohmmeter.

Compare measurements under the same conditions and record actual numbers. A glowing test light or a continuity beep cannot establish that a circuit carries the required load, while a resistance reading taken through a connected module can be misleading. Cylinder-specific symptoms or codes may justify branch testing; P0384 alone does not justify replacing every glow plug.

Verify cold start, MIL, code state, and shift behavior

Verification should answer the owner’s original question: will the truck start normally, keep the MIL off, and operate normally after the repair? After successful programming, complete Ford’s required ignition cycles, rescan every module, and save the result. When conditions allow, observe a true cold start without artificially warming the engine first.

The final record should include the original P0384 status, build and engine confirmation, before-and-after calibration identifiers, programming completion, postrepair code state, cold-start behavior, and any temporary shift adaptation described to the driver. Permanent-code status may follow regulated clearing logic; do not confuse a stored permanent record with proof that the fault is presently active.

If P0384 returns, cold starting worsens, or additional codes appear, reopen diagnosis using the new evidence. If the light stays off, the truck starts normally, and no related faults return, the calibration route has resolved the scoped condition without unnecessary glow-plug parts. That is the difference between treating a code label and solving the driver’s actual problem.
