How to Use the AUTOOL AS506 Brake Fluid Boiling Point Tester Step by Step
The AUTOOL AS506 measures the boiling point of a removed brake-fluid sample. Identify the exact fluid, place more than 40 ml but no more than 50 ml in the supplied beaker, power the tester from a correct 12 V battery, select the matching menu, immerse the sampling hole, and hold START for about 16 seconds.
This is a heated, destructive sample test. The probe and liquid become hot, and tested fluid must never go back into the vehicle. AS506 is not a water-percentage pen, does not identify an unknown fluid, and does not replace the vehicle’s brake-service procedure.

Prepare for a hot brake-fluid sample test
Have the current vehicle service information, the identified brake fluid, the AS506 beaker, a dedicated clean syringe and hose, eye protection, fluid-resistant gloves, suitable absorbent material and an approved waste container. Work in a ventilated, flame-free area. Park securely, apply the parking brake, switch the engine and ignition off, and keep the battery and test area stable.
Brake fluid can damage paint and absorb moisture. Clean around the approved sampling point before opening it, keep the sample equipment free of water and other fluids, and close the reservoir promptly. Do not begin unless the vehicle can remain safely out of service until its fluid level and cap are restored correctly.

Step 1: Confirm the exact tester and measurement
Verify that the unit is an AS506 and that the task is to measure the boiling point of identified automotive brake fluid. Do not use it for coolant, oil, fuel or another liquid.
Completion check: The tester, fluid and intended measurement all match.
Step 2: Identify the brake-fluid specification
Use the reservoir label, vehicle service information and service record to confirm the exact fluid. Do not infer DOT type from color or from the AS506 result.
Stop: If the system contains an unknown, mixed or nonstandard fluid, resolve that condition before testing.
Step 3: Read the vehicle sampling procedure
Confirm where a service sample may be taken, how the opening must be cleaned, and how the reservoir level will be restored after removing 40–50 ml. The AS506 manual explains the tester, not every vehicle’s brake reservoir.
Completion check: You can remove the sample without exposing the system to dirt or leaving the vehicle below its required fluid level.
Step 4: Secure the work area and wear protection
Park on a stable surface, apply the parking brake, switch the engine and ignition off, and keep flames, sparks and smoking materials away. Put on goggles and fluid-resistant gloves before handling the sample.

Step 5: Inspect the AS506 and accessories

Stop: Do not shake, knock, drop or use a damaged test head.
Step 6: Prepare a dedicated clean beaker and sampler
Use only clean, dry sampling equipment reserved for compatible brake fluid. Water, cleaner, old fluid or residue from another DOT type can change the sample and the result.
Completion check: The beaker, syringe and hose are dry, visibly clean and correctly assembled.
Step 7: Clean and open the approved sampling point
Remove loose dirt around the reservoir or other approved point while it remains closed. Open it only as directed by the vehicle service procedure, and prevent lint, moisture or debris from entering.
Common mistake: Wiping the opening with a dirty shop rag can contaminate the brake system and the sample at the same time.

Step 8: Withdraw one representative sample
Use the dedicated syringe and hose to remove approximately 50 ml without touching dirty surfaces. Transfer the fluid directly to the clean beaker and close the vehicle opening promptly.
Stop: Do not continue if the sample contains visible foreign material introduced during collection or if the vehicle fluid level cannot be restored safely.
Step 9: Set the beaker volume between 40 and 50 ml
Confirm that the fluid is above the 40 ml mark and not above 50 ml. Too little fluid can expose the heater and damage the test stick; overfilling raises the spill risk.
Completion check: The beaker is stable, the volume is within the manual’s range, and the sample will never be returned to the vehicle.
Step 10: Restore the vehicle before heating the sample
Reinstall the cap or close the approved sampling point exactly as the vehicle procedure requires. Verify the brake-fluid level and correct it only with the exact new fluid and method specified for the vehicle. Do not drive or release the vehicle with a low level, leak, warning or uncertain cap seal.
Completion check: The vehicle side is clean, closed and safe while the isolated sample remains in the beaker.
Step 11: Connect the AS506 to the 12 V battery
With the vehicle off, connect the red clamp to battery positive and the black clamp to battery negative. The tester powers on automatically. The current manual specifies 12 V operation with a 10 V minimum; do not assume that a differently worded listing authorizes 24 V use.
Stop: Disconnect immediately if polarity, voltage, clamp contact or battery condition is uncertain. Never allow the clamps to touch each other or another circuit.

Step 12: Choose Normal or Brand mode
Use TAB to move between NORMAL and BRAND, then press START to enter the selected mode. Normal mode selects a general fluid type; Brand mode selects one of the built-in brands and then a fluid type associated with that menu.

Step 13: Select the exact displayed fluid entry
Use TAB to move through the available entries and START to confirm. The exact menu can differ by mode or delivered revision, so do not force an approximate choice merely because the broader product specification mentions more fluid families.
Stop: If the confirmed fluid has no exact suitable entry, do not substitute another type; obtain model-specific guidance.
Step 14: Review the ready screen
Check the selected type or brand, displayed dry and wet reference boiling points, and battery voltage. If any field does not match the intended test, return to the menu before inserting or heating the probe.
Completion check: Fluid selection, reference values and supply voltage are all visible and plausible.

Step 15: Immerse the sampling hole and release trapped air
Lower the test stick vertically into the beaker until the sampling hole is fully immersed. Gently position it so air bubbles leave the cavity inside the test head; keep the beaker upright and do not strike the heater against it.
Completion check: The sampling hole remains below the fluid surface and no trapped bubble is visible around the test cavity.
Step 16: Hold START for about 16 seconds
Keep the beaker and tester steady, then press and hold START. The progress bar advances while the display shows live fluid temperature and battery voltage. Do not lift the probe, add fluid or touch the beaker, liquid or heater during the cycle.
Stop: End the test if the beaker tips, the fluid level no longer covers the sampling hole, the power connection becomes unstable or abnormal heating occurs.

Step 17: Read and record the complete result
When the progress bar finishes, record the measured boiling point, displayed status, selected mode, selected fluid entry, dry and wet reference values, battery voltage and vehicle/sample identity. A number without the selected reference has little traceable meaning.
Completion check: The result can be linked to the exact vehicle, sample, fluid selection and test condition.
Step 18: Interpret the boiling point conservatively
Compare the result with the AS506 screen, the correct fluid specification and the vehicle’s service requirements. Dry and wet reference values describe defined fluid benchmarks; they are not a universal replacement schedule for every vehicle or proof of the cause of a low reading.
A low or warning result supports brake-fluid service or further diagnosis under the vehicle procedure. It does not by itself identify water percentage, a hydraulic leak, caliper condition, ABS condition or every reason for poor braking.
Step 19: Do not repeatedly boil the same sample
If the same sample is tested again, its reading may change because the first cycle has already heated and altered it. For a verification test, allow the tester to cool and use a new representative sample collected under the same controlled method.
Common mistake: Averaging repeated boils of one sample can create false confidence rather than a more accurate baseline.
Step 20: Let the probe cool and remove it vertically
Keep hands clear until the test stick and fluid have cooled enough for safe handling. Lift the unit vertically so hot brake fluid does not run toward the housing or spill from the beaker.
Stop: Never touch the heater or fluid immediately after the test.
Step 21: Dispose of the tested fluid
Place the cooled tested sample in an approved brake-fluid waste container. Never pour it back into the reservoir: the AS506 has boiled and changed the sample.
Completion check: Tested fluid is segregated from new fluid and cannot be mistaken for reusable brake fluid.
Step 22: Run the manual’s water-cleaning cycle
After the brake fluid has been emptied and the equipment is safe to handle, place about 50 ml of clean water in the beaker and follow the manual’s water-test procedure to remove residual corrosive brake fluid from the test stick. Apply the same immersion, stability and burn precautions, then dispose of the rinse appropriately.

Step 23: Disconnect and store the tester
Disconnect the black negative clamp first, then the red positive clamp, unless the vehicle service information specifies another safe isolation sequence. Store the clean, dry AS506, beaker and sampling tools in their case without bending or striking the heater.
Common mistake: Packing a wet or brake-fluid-coated test stick can corrode the tool and contaminate the next sample.
How to use the water check without overcalling calibration
The manual describes a water test around 100°C / 212°F ±3% as a quick initial operating check. Local air pressure and altitude change water’s boiling point, so treat this as a field check under appropriate local conditions, not a substitute for traceable calibration. If a cooled, clean tester repeatedly falls outside the expected local range, stop using it for decisions and arrange manufacturer calibration.
