The 2019 Hyundai Tucson arrived with P0300 and P0302, rough running and weak power. Swapping the cylinder-two ignition coil did not move the misfire. Relative compression, fuel checks and the usual ignition tests still did not reveal a clean culprit. Two spark plugs carried brown marks on their insulators—but color is an ambiguous clue, not a diagnosis.

Let P0302 choose a cylinder, not a part

Record the conditions that set P0302: cold start, idle, load, rpm and engine temperature. The Tucson had about 71,988 miles and its engine had previously been replaced under a recall at roughly 34,433 miles, history worth preserving without assuming the replacement caused the fault. Save freeze frame, Mode 06 misfire results and fuel trims before clearing. Check oil and coolant and avoid a hard drive if the MIL flashes, because sustained misfire can damage the catalyst.

Use a coil swap as a controlled question

Move the cylinder-two coil to another cylinder and place the known coil on two, then repeat the same conditions. In this case, the misfire did not follow. Inspect boot carbon tracking, oil or coolant in the well and terminal fit while the coil is out. A non-moving fault lowers the probability of the coil, but it does not clear ignition entirely: plug, wiring, driver command and cylinder pressure still affect the spark under load.

Check compression and fueling without forcing a result

Relative compression did not isolate a mechanical deficit, and fuel/ignition checks did not provide a decisive cause. Why the stain needed context

The mature case treated the marks on two plugs as leakage evidence. That interpretation became stronger only after the coil swap and broader tests failed to move the diagnosis. Check threads and seats, verify the correct reach and heat range and look for damage from prior installation. If a sealing surface is compromised, a new plug alone may not last. Close with misfire data and a loaded drive

Check pending and confirmed DTCs after sufficient operation, and compare fuel trims and power with the original complaint. The documented Tucson ran well and returned no codes after the plug set. That successful response closes a plug-related fault on this car; it does not prove the visual mark’s chemistry. If cylinder two counts return, reopen compression, injector and control-circuit testing rather than installing another set.

The stain was neither ignored nor promoted to certainty. It became one clue inside a controlled sequence, and the specified plug replacement earned its conclusion by making the same misfire disappear.
