How to Use the FXTUL M4 Motorcycle Diagnostic Tool
The FXTUL M4 motorcycle diagnostic tool can scan supported motorcycle control units, read and clear diagnostic trouble codes, show freeze-frame and live data, display diagnostic-connection voltage, and expose supported actuation or service functions. A reliable M4 job starts one step earlier: choose the correct M4 variant and physical adapter, then preserve the first scan before changing anything.
The M4 does not make one adapter, menu path or service function universal. Connector location, key state, normal values, actuator prerequisites, resets and post-repair checks change by motorcycle. Use the exact motorcycle service information and current M4 coverage at every vehicle-specific decision.

Choose the correct M4 variant before connecting
Five current M4 listings share the same handheld interface and manual, but their enabled coverage and supplied adapters differ. Treat the model name on the order, the physical kit in front of you and the currently published vehicle/system coverage as one identity check.

Do not count brand logos and assume compatibility. A make can contain multiple connector generations, control-unit suppliers and system configurations. If the vehicle or function is absent after a correct software update, stop at the coverage gap instead of forcing a different brand path.
Prepare the motorcycle and the diagnostic record
Have the exact service information, the identified M4 kit, the required undamaged adapter, a stable power plan permitted for the motorcycle, and a job record ready. Record the make, model, year, VIN when applicable, odometer, complaint, warning lamps, recent repairs, battery condition and the conditions that trigger the symptom.
Inspect the scanner housing, fixed diagnostic lead, adapter branches and connector terminals. Inspect the motorcycle diagnostic connector for corrosion, water, contamination, bent or pushed-back terminals and previous probing damage. A connector that looks similar but needs force is the wrong connection or is damaged.
Stabilize the motorcycle on the support specified by its service procedure. Keep the work area ventilated and control fuel vapor, exhaust, hot surfaces, rotating parts and unintended wheel movement. Decide who controls the ignition and engine before anyone reaches near the motorcycle.
FXTUL M4 step-by-step diagnostic workflow

Step 1: Record the exact M4 variant and installed versions
Read the model or order identity and compare the actual contents with the five kit patterns above. List every adapter present by its printed label; do not describe it only by color or pin count. If the kit has been mixed with other cables, separate uncertain items before the job.
Power the M4 through an approved diagnostic connection or the computer update connection described later. Open Help and record the application, menu and software-package versions that the installed device displays. Those numbers make a later coverage or support question reproducible.
Completion check: The job record identifies the exact M4 variant, installed versions and physical adapter set.

Step 2: Confirm exact vehicle, system and adapter coverage
Check current coverage for the exact make, model, year and target system—not only the brand. Match the required adapter name to the label on the cable in your hand. For a specialized M4-BMW, M4-DUC or M4-HD kit, confirm the connector generation as well as the motorcycle family.
Service functions are a second compatibility decision. The fact that a page lists ABS, immobilizer, service reset or an actuation category does not prove that one function is available on every motorcycle. Confirm the exact installed system and required function before promising the job.
Stop: Do not continue if the only match is a similar model, an unlabeled adapter or an assumed pinout.
Step 3: Locate and inspect the diagnostic connector
Use the motorcycle service information to find the diagnostic connector and determine whether a cap, seat, fairing or other part must be removed. Identify pin orientation from the approved procedure. Never probe terminals merely to discover which connector might be diagnostic.
With ignition in the state required for inspection, check the connector and cap for damage and moisture. Support any removed trim and route the scanner lead away from the exhaust, steering stops, chain, belt, fan and wheel.
Completion check: The exact connector is identified, visually serviceable and reachable without loading the harness.
Step 4: Stabilize the motorcycle and electrical supply
Follow the motorcycle procedure for key position, engine state and battery support. If an approved maintainer is required, connect it exactly as specified before beginning the scan. Do not substitute a high-current booster or an unknown charger for a diagnostic power plan.
If the engine must run later, move the work outside or use effective exhaust extraction. Keep the driven wheel controlled and do not position the M4 where it can fall into moving or hot parts.
Completion check: The motorcycle is stable, ventilation is adequate and voltage can remain within the vehicle procedure through the complete scan.
Step 5: Connect the labeled adapter without forcing it
Keep the key or ignition in the state required by the motorcycle procedure. Join the M4 main lead to the exact labeled adapter, align keyed features, and seat each connector by its housing. Connect to the motorcycle only after the complete cable path has been checked.
Support the scanner so its weight does not hang from the vehicle connector. If a terminal backs out, a latch will not seat or the adapter must be twisted, disconnect and resolve the mismatch. Do not file keys, bridge pins or hold a loose connection by hand during a scan.
Completion check: The connection is fully seated, strain-free and routed clear of heat and movement.
Step 6: Set language and units, then reopen Help
From Settings, choose the language and metric or imperial units that make the job record unambiguous. Use the installed menu rather than relying on a fixed language-count claim, because software packages can change.
Return to Help and confirm the versions still match the record from Step 1. If the M4 restarts unexpectedly or identifies a different package, stop and investigate power, cable seating and software identity before scanning.
Completion check: Language, units and all displayed version identifiers are recorded.
Step 7: Select the brand and the exact identity route
Open Diagnose, choose the correct brand, then follow the identity choices shown by the installed package. The M4 manual shows brand selection followed by Quick Test or Control Unit. Some current variant guidance also describes Model Selection, System Selection or VIN Identify when that exact menu and supported brand expose it.
Use a model/VIN/system route only when the installed device offers it and the resulting identity agrees with the motorcycle. Do not select a near year or a different model simply to reach a control unit. An identity mismatch invalidates later code and live-data conclusions.
Completion check: The M4 displays the exact vehicle identity or a service-information-supported system route without guessing.

Step 8: Run Quick Test without clearing anything
Choose Quick Test to scan the systems assembled on the selected motorcycle. Allow the scan to finish unless the motorcycle procedure or an unsafe condition requires a stop. Note every module reported as present, not communicating, passed or faulted.
Do not use the F2 one-click clear option during the baseline scan. It can erase DTC and freeze-frame evidence across multiple assembled systems before you understand the original fault pattern.
Completion check: Quick Test is complete and no clear command has been accepted.

Step 9: Open Report and save the pre-clear baseline
Use F1 Report to review assembly status, faulted systems and available descriptions. Photograph, transcribe or otherwise preserve the complete report according to workshop policy. Include modules that did not communicate; a missing module can be as important as a stored code.
Record code status and the operating context before interpreting descriptions. A code identifies a monitored condition or circuit; it does not, by itself, name the failed part. Compare the whole-vehicle pattern with battery condition, recent work and the complaint.
Completion check: The report, DTC list, communication status and test conditions can be reconstructed without reconnecting the vehicle.

Step 10: Enter the affected Control Unit and record module identity
Return to the diagnosis-mode screen and choose Control Unit. Select the system supported by the baseline evidence. Open Module Information and record identifiers such as calibration, serial or VIN data when the module provides them.
If module identity conflicts with the selected vehicle, stop. A swapped controller, incorrect route or unsupported package can make data labels and service functions unsafe to use.
Completion check: The selected control unit and its available identity information agree with the vehicle record.
Step 11: Read current and pending codes before any clear command
Open Read Fault Code and capture current, pending and any other status the selected system presents. Some motorcycles do not require a separate current/pending choice; record what this exact control unit displays rather than inventing a status.
Use help text when available, but diagnose the circuit through the motorcycle procedure. Check shared power, ground or communication patterns before replacing a component named in a description.
Completion check: Every displayed code and status is saved with its module and test conditions.
Step 12: Save freeze frame, then select a small live-data set
Open Read Freeze Data before clearing. Save the DTC-linked values and units. Freeze frame captures a particular recorded condition; it is not proof that every value was valid or that the same condition exists now.
For Live Data Stream, select only parameters needed to test one theory. A compact set—such as engine speed, voltage, one command and its feedback—is easier to time-align than every available value. Establish the motorcycle procedure’s expected range before calling a value abnormal.
If reproducing the complaint requires running the engine or moving a control, assign one person to the motorcycle and one to the scanner. Never read the screen while riding.
Completion check: Freeze-frame evidence is preserved and the live-data capture answers a written diagnostic question.
Step 13: Treat actuation and service functions as controlled procedures
The exact control unit may expose Actuation Test or Service / Maintenance. These commands can run a pump, fan, injector, coil, lamp or other component, and specialized variants may expose resets, adaptations, ABS procedures or other state-changing operations.
Before accepting one, obtain the exact motorcycle procedure and verify prerequisites: support position, fluid level, temperature, key/engine state, battery support, access clearance and the people controlling the test. Keep hands, fuel and tools clear of components that may move, heat, spark or pressurize.
Stop: If the purpose, supported system, expected response, exit condition or recovery path is uncertain, do not run the function.
Step 14: Repair the cause and preserve the before/after record
Use the saved DTC, freeze frame, live data, wiring information and direct tests to identify the cause. Repair the verified fault through the motorcycle procedure. Do not replace a sensor, controller or hydraulic component solely because its name appears in a code or menu.
Before clearing, save any final pre-repair measurements needed for comparison. Then restore every disconnected part, connector lock, fuse, ground and cover required for a safe post-repair check.
Completion check: The repair is cause-based, documented and ready for the prescribed verification conditions.
Step 15: Clear only after repair, then rescan and verify
Use Clear Fault Code only after the original evidence is saved and the repair is complete. Read the warning: fault-code and freeze information will be erased. Accept the command only when that data loss is intentional.
Cycle the ignition only as the motorcycle procedure requires. Repeat Quick Test and the affected Control Unit scan, then reproduce the original operating conditions safely. Compare before/after codes and live data. A lamp that turns off immediately after clearing is not proof of repair.
Completion check: The original symptom is tested under the required conditions, the system communicates normally, and the final scan is attached to the job record.

Use Voltage Detection as a connection check
From the main menu, choose Voltage Detection to view voltage at the diagnostic connection. Press F1 when the installed screen offers the waveform. Use this to catch an obvious low, unstable or interrupted supply during communication.
The reading is not a complete battery, starting or charging-system diagnosis. If voltage is implausible, isolate the cause with the correct measurement points, a suitable meter and the motorcycle procedure before continuing. Do not treat a generic on-screen low-voltage message as an instruction to replace the battery.

Update M4 software from a computer
First record the current versions under Help and obtain an exact M4 update package through the current FXTUL route. Do not substitute a package or file sequence from another scanner model or variant.
- Use the M4 USB data cable to connect the scanner to a computer and wait for the M4 drive to appear.
- Verify the drive identity before changing any folder.
- Unpack the exact M4 update package without renaming its files.
- Replace the scanner drive’s DIAGNOSE folder with the exact upgrade folder.
- Allow the entire copy to complete; do not remove power during the transfer.
- Disconnect the drive safely, power on the M4 normally, and record the versions shown under Help.
- Recheck exact vehicle and function coverage before returning to the motorcycle.
The M4 USB interface is a 5 V computer/data connection for updates. Do not connect it to a fast charger or any charger above 5 V.

A complete M4 job identifies the exact Asia, EU, BMW, Ducati or Harley-Davidson kit; matches the physical adapter and current vehicle/system coverage; records software versions; stabilizes the motorcycle and power supply; and saves the first Quick Test report before any clear command. It then investigates one control unit with DTC, freeze-frame, bounded live-data and direct-test evidence.
The job closes with a cause-based repair, an intentional clear only after evidence is preserved, and a final scan under the required operating conditions. That sequence turns the M4 from a code display into a repeatable motorcycle diagnostic record.
