A discharged 12-volt battery after a Volkswagen has sat in storage is a condition, not yet a defect verdict. Before attaching a charger, preserve the custody chain: when the car was parked, ignition state, maintainer use, non-factory loads, battery label, prior charge attempts, and the first measured voltage. Charging first may restore mobility but erase the history needed to explain the failure.

For a compatible 12-volt lead-acid starting battery, a conductance tester can add voltage, health, cranking, and charging observations. The FXTUL BT50 battery tester is one portable example. It cannot test the high-voltage traction battery, cover every VW 12-volt chemistry, retrieve the vehicle’s energy history, prove parasitic draw, or decide warranty eligibility.

Volkswagen TSB 27-24-01 treats preparation and documentation as part of diagnosis and separates gasoline-vehicle and EV paths. That is the right mindset: every charger connection, ignition-on interval, and test result becomes a dated entry. Stop before charging if the battery is frozen, swollen, leaking, hot, or has an abnormal odor.

Quick answer: Before charging, preserve the storage, ignition, accessory, maintainer, battery-label, and prior-charge history; a discharged battery is not yet a defect verdict.

Start the record before attaching a charger

Photograph the battery label, terminal condition, warning messages, odometer, and measured open-circuit voltage. Record storage start/end, temperature, whether doors or tailgate were open, ignition or accessory mode, key proximity, transport mode, software work, diagnostic sessions, showroom operation, and maintainer connection.

List dash cameras, trackers, chargers, inverters, OBD devices, alarms, and other non-OEM loads. Do not disconnect them invisibly; document which device was removed and when. If the battery is swollen, frozen, leaking, hot, or smells abnormal, do not charge it.

Identify battery chemistry and capacity

Read the physical label and VIN-specific service information. Record technology, amp-hour capacity, cold-cranking rating, part number, age/date code, and whether adaptation or registration was performed after prior replacement. Do not select a tester mode by appearance alone.

AGM, enhanced flooded, conventional lead-acid, and other 12-volt batteries have different charging and testing requirements. An EV still has a low-voltage battery, but its support and charging behavior is not the same as a gasoline car’s alternator system.

Separate storage discharge from battery defect

A healthy battery can be discharged by weeks without maintenance, prolonged ignition-on time, repeated door openings, software programming without support, a non-OEM accessory, or a module that fails to sleep. A defective or aged battery can also collapse under a normal parked load. Both may be true.

Do not use one low voltage reading to choose between those columns.

Build the ignition and accessory timeline

Write a simple chronological log: arrival voltage, each ignition-on period, door-open work, scan/programming session, charger connection, accessory removal, rest period, and restart. Include who performed each step and what support equipment was used.

For a vehicle that died at a storage facility or dealer lot, ask for movement and maintenance records. The location and duration of energy use can be more decisive than the battery brand.

Charge before judging condition

After the intake record is complete, charge by Volkswagen’s current vehicle- and battery-specific procedure. Use the correct mode, temperature compensation, connection points, ventilation, and adequate power supply for diagnostic/programming work. A short boost is not a full charge.

Allow the battery to stabilize if the procedure requires it, then record charger result, energy returned, time, interruptions, and post-charge voltage. A tester can misclassify a deeply discharged or surface-charged battery when preparation is skipped.

Use a battery test within its chemistry fence

Enter the rating printed on the battery and choose the matching standard and chemistry. Test at the specified posts, not through corroded clamps. Save the actual report rather than writing “good.” Compare measured conductance/health with cranking voltage and the vehicle’s charging or DC-DC behavior.

A conductance result is an estimate based on the battery model; it is not a capacity discharge test and does not prove the car has no draw. If the chemistry is unsupported, use Volkswagen-approved equipment and procedure.

Keep gasoline and EV procedures separate

Volkswagen’s bulletin distinguishes combustion-engine and electric-vehicle workflows. A gasoline model’s generator test cannot be applied to an EV. On an EV, the high-voltage system may maintain the 12-volt bus only under defined conditions, and high-voltage diagnosis requires trained personnel and insulated safety procedures.

Keep hands out of orange high-voltage components. The 12-volt battery tester discussed here never evaluates traction-battery state of health.

Verify after a representative storage interval

After charging, testing, correcting external influences, and completing any approved repair, return the vehicle to the original parking state. Confirm the applicable sleep-state current by the service procedure when draw is suspected, then leave it through a representative storage interval with the documented maintainer policy.

Record before/after voltage, successful wake and start, and repeat battery result if required. Check VIN-specific recalls or service campaigns separately through Volkswagen’s official lookup. The case closes when the battery retains usable charge through the original use pattern and the custody chain explains what changed.

Hand over a reproducible storage case

Provide the shop with the battery-label photo, dated voltage readings, charge report, test standard and rating entered, storage duration, maintainer record, accessory list, ignition-on sessions, and the exact park state that produced the failure. Ask it to keep gasoline or EV procedure identity on the report. That packet allows a technician to distinguish a battery that cannot retain charge from a vehicle or external device that keeps consuming it, without treating either possibility as automatic warranty proof.
