Do not authorize a 10R80 teardown from an old air check. Ford replaced that method because it produced a high rate of false positives. When a current Workshop Manual pinpoint test refers to a specific A–F clutch, the approved route is the FDRS Transmission Clutch Circuit Leak Test using the pressure and vacuum transducer when available. A conventional line-pressure gauge can provide separate hydraulic context at an approved port, but it is not the FDRS clutch-circuit test and cannot justify replacement by itself.

A hydraulic pressure kit still has a useful, narrower job: it can show whether actual line pressure at a verified service port agrees with the specification under a defined operating condition. An AUTOOL PT650 can support that comparison when its adapters and range match the vehicle. PT650 can compare actual transmission line pressure with the correct specification at a verified compatible service port and operating condition; it cannot run Ford’s FDRS clutch-circuit leak test, connect to every 10R80 clutch circuit, decide PVT availability, duplicate commanded states or turn an obsolete air check into valid replacement evidence.

This is a diagnosis in which the familiar test is now the trap. Ford retired the 10R80 air check because an apparent leak too often became a false reason for internal repair or complete transmission replacement.

Quick answer: Discard the obsolete air-check verdict, identify the exact A–F clutch branch and preserve Ford’s current FDRS/PVT leak-test report before teardown.

Pause any decision based on an air check

If the only case for teardown is that a clutch circuit seemed to leak during an air check, pause the authorization. Ford SSM 54719 states that the previous air-check procedure produced a high rate of false positives and is not to be used to diagnose internal hydraulic leaks or justify transmission replacement. That does not mean the shift complaint is imaginary. It means the evidence cannot answer the question being asked. Preserve the original symptoms, codes, fluid condition and test notes, then restart from the current Workshop Manual instead of trying the obsolete method again at a different air pressure.

Confirm that the transmission is a 10R80

Confirm the vehicle actually has a 10R80 before applying this instruction. Ford describes the change for 2021–2026 vehicles equipped with that transmission, across multiple nameplates, rather than for every Ford ten-speed or every harsh shift. Use the VIN and build data, identify any previous transmission work and record the software level. A 10R60, 10R80 MHT or another unit may have a different hydraulic layout and procedure. Also distinguish a suspected clutch-circuit leak from low fluid, an external leak, electrical control trouble, adaptation behavior or mechanical noise. The service message changes one diagnostic method; it does not collapse every transmission complaint into one failure.

Start from the current pinpoint test

Begin with the current diagnostic path in Workshop Manual Section 307-01. Save all powertrain and transmission codes with freeze-frame or failure records, verify fluid level and condition by the prescribed temperature-based process, and reproduce the complaint only as safely as needed. A pinpoint test may direct the technician to one of the named clutch assemblies. Follow that branch in the current revision. Jumping from a ratio or pressure code straight to a leak test skips the electrical, input and operational conditions that make the result meaningful. The manual—not an online symptom list—defines the prerequisites and pass/fail logic.

Identify the specific clutch A through F

Name the circuit before testing it. The 10R80 uses clutch designations A through F, and Ford’s updated Clutch Assembly tests link to the new procedure when a specific circuit needs evaluation. Record which clutch the pinpoint test selected and what evidence selected it. A test result for one commanded circuit cannot be generalized to the whole valve body or every clutch pack. If several codes point in different directions, resolve power supply, communications and shared pressure conditions first. A precise label makes the later report reviewable; ‘transmission leaks internally’ does not.

Use the FDRS leak test when directed

When directed, run the FDRS Transmission Clutch Circuit Leak Test through the current ‘Transmission Line Pressure Test – Pressure Vacuum Transducer (PVT) Is Available’ general procedure. Ford says the test uses the PVT when available. Maintain battery support, correct fluid conditions, safe lift practices and every on-screen instruction. Save the generated report rather than copying only a final color or pass/fail word. If the PVT or required software is unavailable, document that limitation and use the alternate path Ford supplies; do not recreate the old air check and call it equivalent.

Keep line pressure in its proper role

A conventional line-pressure reading can still answer a different question. At the correct port and temperature, it can compare base or commanded hydraulic pressure with the service specification and help confirm a broad supply problem. It cannot isolate the leakage rate of clutch A, B, C, D, E or F in the same way as the FDRS procedure. Use a hose and gauge rated for the fluid and expected pressure, secure them away from moving and hot parts, and observe from a protected position. Treat the measurement as supporting context, never as a substitute result carrying Ford’s procedure name.

Do not convert noise into a leak percentage

Hiss, bubbling or the speed at which shop air seems to escape cannot be converted into a valid leak percentage. Seal clearances, clutch position, valve state, oil film and air compressibility all affect what the operator hears. More air pressure does not make the old method more decisive; it can make the comparison less safe and less relevant. If the FDRS result conflicts with the symptom, check that the specified clutch, setup and prerequisites were correct, then follow the manual’s next branch. Do not average an approved electronic test with an unapproved listening impression.

Save the report before approving internal work

Before approving internal work, put the evidence in one sequence: customer symptom, verified transmission identity, complete scan, fluid checks, pinpoint-test branch, named clutch, FDRS/PVT report and any valid line-pressure context. Explain whether the current test found a leak and what manual step follows. After an authorized repair, repeat the relevant verification under the original temperature and load, check fluid level, scan again and document shift quality. If the approved test passes, pursue the remaining electrical, hydraulic or mechanical branch rather than letting the sunk cost of the earlier air check decide the outcome.

The owner-facing question is not whether a transmission can leak internally; it is whether this one has been proved to do so. Stop driving if the vehicle loses engagement, slips badly or cannot move predictably. Ford’s change makes the evidence distinction unusually clear. Discard the old air-check verdict, identify the exact 10R80 clutch branch and preserve the FDRS test report before anyone approves major work. A pressure gauge can help explain the hydraulic background, but the current factory test must carry the clutch-circuit conclusion.
