Passenger carpet that becomes wet after the A/C has run gives you a powerful clue: the event clock points toward condensate. On a 2020–2024 Corvette covered by GM PIC6447B, there are two named paths to inspect—a partly or fully disconnected HVAC drain tube and a nearby body-panel seam/mastic leak. The car can have both, so finding one is not permission to stop.

A slim articulating camera can help document the restricted area once trim or underbody access is safely established. The MRCARTOOL N220 inspection camera is one way to record the drain and seam route. It cannot identify coolant versus water, prove a seam is watertight, see through carpet padding, replace lift safety, or substitute for a controlled condensate or water retest.

Open two boxes on the work order—drain tube and body seam—and do not close the job until both have a result.

Quick answer: If Corvette passenger carpet gets wet after A/C use, inspect both the drain-tube connection and the nearby body seam because either—or both—may leak.

Use the event clock to identify the liquid

Ask when the carpet first becomes wet. Immediately after extended A/C use points toward condensate. After rain or washing points toward body, glass, roof, or cowl entry. A sweet odor, slippery feel, coolant loss, or window film can suggest heater-system coolant, but do not taste automotive fluid or rely on color alone.

Record outside temperature and humidity, A/C run time, parking angle, rain history, recent trim/body/HVAC work, and whether a normal condensate puddle appears under the car. Photograph the wet boundary before lifting carpet. If modules or connectors are submerged, disconnect power only by the approved method and arrange professional drying and inspection.

Open both leak boxes at the start

PIC6447B warns that repairing only one condition can produce a comeback from the other. The two paths sit close together:

Mark both “unexamined” before work. A connected tube does not clear the seam; a failed seam does not prove the tube is secure.

Inspect the drain tube behind the carpet

The drain is behind carpet that rises vertically along the right side of the center console. Access belongs under current GM service information to avoid trim, restraint, wiring, and interior damage. Use a wide establishing view before the close-up so another technician can identify the location.

Look for a tube that is fully seated, not merely touching the opening. Check for distortion, debris, damage, water tracks and evidence that condensate escaped at the joint. Do not push wire or high-pressure air blindly through the drain; either can damage the tube or evaporator case and move debris elsewhere.

Inspect the seam below the outlet

GM identifies a body-panel seam just forward of and several inches below the drain exit. Underbody access requires lifting the Corvette correctly and removing the front floor-panel tunnel reinforcement under SI. The black mastic patch may be absent, poorly adhered, or already present but ineffective.

Trace the highest fresh wet point. If the seam is suspected, reproduce with controlled water or condensate rather than flooding the entire body at once. The repair described by GM addresses the seam from inside and covers the outside area with correctly applied mastic. Random sealant from the visible cabin side may hide the route without stopping entry.

Assume both can exist together

Use an A/B sequence without changing multiple variables:

  1. Dry the observation areas and padding enough to see new water.
  2. Run the A/C under a recorded humidity, temperature, and time condition.
  3. Watch the tube connection and seam separately.
  4. Repair the confirmed first path.
  5. Repeat the same trigger while the second box remains under observation.

If new water appears after the first repair, that is not automatically a failed repair. It may be the second condition the bulletin warned about.

Dry the hidden padding and protect electronics

Carpet can feel dry on top while thick padding holds water against metal, wiring, connectors, and sound insulation. Lift only as the service procedure allows. Extract moisture, provide airflow, and document affected connectors or modules. Clean and treat contamination appropriately; standing water can produce odor, corrosion, fogging, and intermittent electrical faults later.

Do not return the car merely because the visible carpet surface is dry.

Retest one water source at a time

For a body-water test, start low and local, then move upward in short timed zones. Spraying the entire roof, glass, and underbody at once proves only that the cabin can get wet. For the A/C test, record run time and verify condensate exits beneath the car while the interior remains dry.

Use dry tissue flags or absorbent strips around separate joints to reveal first arrival. Keep the test angle, water rate, and duration consistent before and after repair.

Close both boxes before returning the car

The final record should state that the drain is seated and flowing, the seam/mastic route is dry under the controlled retest, the carpet and padding are dry, affected electrical areas are clean, and no odor or corrosion remains. Repeat an A/C run long enough to create condensate, then inspect immediately and again after a short soak.

A complete result is not “we found a disconnected tube.” It is “both named paths were tested, the confirmed path or paths were repaired, condensate exits outside, and the same trigger no longer wets the cabin.”
