Measure and record 12-volt battery voltage before clearing codes. LiveWire says not to recharge a battery below 8 V; replace it. At 8–11 V, charge it before continuing; at 12 V or higher, continue the diagnostic sequence. Then save the vehicle report, update modules, allow sleep, recheck current DTCs and examine the five histories: zero high-voltage SOC, tip-over not reset, towing without transport mode, direct battery accessories and charging attempts below 32°F (0°C). The traction battery should be brought to at least 25% displayed SOC before the final test ride.

On this electric motorcycle, a flat small battery is often the last link in the story, not the first cause. LiveWire’s process uses voltage gates first and then asks what happened to the high-voltage battery, vehicle state, transport setup, accessories and temperature.
Quick answer: Record battery voltage and DTCs, obey the 8 V no-recharge gate, then investigate HV SOC, tip-over, transport, accessories and freezing history.

Measure before charging or clearing codes
Measure at the 12-volt battery before connecting a charger, jump source or diagnostic tool, and write down the reading. Photograph the meter connection and note how long the motorcycle had been parked. Do not clear DTCs; LiveWire specifically says to print or record them first. Inspect for swelling, damage, heat or loose terminals without creating a spark near the battery. If the vehicle is unresponsive, repeated power-button presses do not add useful evidence and may consume the small reserve left. The first clean voltage reading separates the safety gate from the later search for why the battery depleted.
Use 8 V and 11 V as the first gates
LiveWire gives three voltage decisions. Below 8 V, do not attempt to recharge the 12-volt battery; install a new one. From 8 through 11 V, charge it before proceeding. At 12 V or higher, continue to the diagnostic sequence. Follow the current service procedure for exact measurement and charging equipment, because nominal voltage alone is not a complete battery-health test. Do not use a car’s running alternator or an uncontrolled boost source. A replacement battery restores access to the motorcycle, but the job remains open until the condition that discharged it has been addressed.

Ask what the high-voltage SOC reached
Ask what the displayed high-voltage state of charge showed before the motorcycle stopped waking. LiveWire says an S2 at 0% high-voltage SOC will not maintain the 12-volt battery. That makes ‘the traction battery was empty’ causal context rather than a separate complaint. Record whether the motorcycle sat at zero and for how long, whether charging was attempted and what the display did. Do not enter the high-voltage system or make direct traction-battery measurements. Those circuits require LiveWire procedures, isolation checks and trained personnel.
Check tip-over and transport history
Two status histories are easy to miss. A vehicle that has tipped and was not reset can deplete the 12-volt battery. A motorcycle that was towed or hauled without transport mode can do the same. Ask about a parking fall, workshop lift incident, roadside tow, trailer trip or dealer transfer—even if no damage was reported. Record dates and whether the dash was powered afterward. Use Digital Technician II and the current Electrical Diagnostic Manual to check and correct the actual state. Replacing a battery without asking those questions can make a one-time event look like a mysterious recurring defect.
Disconnect direct battery accessories from the story
List every accessory connected directly to the 12-volt battery: trackers, alarms, heated gear leads, USB outlets, cameras or charging pigtails. Photograph their routing and fuse arrangement before disconnecting anything. LiveWire names direct-battery accessories as a possible drain source. Isolate one branch at a time through an approved parasitic-load test after the motorcycle has completed its sleep period. Do not assume a small accessory is harmless because its advertised running current is low; standby behavior and wiring faults matter. Factory-connected accessories and direct aftermarket wiring should not be treated as the same circuit.
Account for a RESS below freezing
Temperature can produce a particularly confusing sequence. LiveWire says the S2 will not charge when Rechargeable Energy Storage System temperature is below 32°F (0°C): the contactors remain open during the attempt, while the 12-volt battery is depleted. Record overnight temperature, storage location, how many charging attempts were made and whether the pack later warmed. Move the motorcycle only through approved cold-weather guidance; do not heat the battery with a space heater or hot air. A cold-soaked charging failure can be expected behavior and still leave a genuinely depleted 12-volt battery that needs the voltage-gate response.
Update, sleep and rescan with DT II
With a serviceable 12-volt battery installed or charged, power the motorcycle and connect Digital Technician II. Create a Vehicle Summary Report to capture software versions and DTCs, update available modules, then switch the vehicle off and allow it to sleep; the bulletin notes this may take up to five minutes. Power it back on, reconnect and record current codes. Follow the Electrical Diagnostic Manual for anything that remains current. Do not clear the history to create a neat report. The before/update/sleep/after sequence is how the workshop separates old low-voltage fallout from a condition that is still active.
Reach 25% HV SOC and complete the test ride
If no current DTC remains, verify the motorcycle’s functions, then charge the vehicle so high-voltage SOC increases by at least two percentage points and reaches at least 25% displayed SOC. Only then complete the bulletin’s test ride of at least one mile in safe conditions. Rescan if new warnings appear and follow the manual. The handoff should state the original 12-volt reading, battery action, software and code results, identified cause history, starting/final HV SOC and ride result. That turns ‘dead again’ into a preventable scenario or a clearly documented recurring fault.
The S2’s small battery cannot be diagnosed in isolation from the motorcycle’s larger energy and state history. Stop any charging attempt below LiveWire’s 8 V boundary, preserve voltage and codes, then work through zero HV SOC, tip-over, transport, direct accessories and freezing-pack conditions. Finishing with an updated, sleeping, rescanned vehicle at 25% or more HV SOC gives the rider a cause and a usable prevention plan—not just a fresh 12-volt battery.
