A dead battery is a state of charge, not yet a diagnosis. Maserati’s June 2022 policy treats a defensible battery decision as a sequence: interview and inspect, save a starting test, fully recharge with the correct profile, wait at least four hours, and save a final test. Repeated discharge adds a sleep-current investigation. Skipping the interval erases the comparison.

A compatible 12V tester can help create an independent battery, starting, and charging record when its chemistry and rated CCA are entered correctly. The AUTOOL BT960 battery tester is one route for those observations. It cannot produce Maserati’s warranty-accepted Pico report, force modules to sleep, locate a parasitic circuit, prove a battery from a low-charge test, or replace the required recharge-and-rest interval.

Think of the vehicle as arriving with a chain of custody. The first low result belongs to the complaint. The rested final result belongs to the battery. Mixing them produces a poor verdict.

Quick answer: Preserve the arrival test, fully recharge with the right chemistry, wait at least four hours, and compare the final result; repeat discharge also needs sleep-current evidence.

Do not let the first low reading become the verdict

Photograph warning messages and record whether the starter was silent, slow, or normal, whether a jump was used, and how long the vehicle sat. Measure open-circuit voltage only after confirming safe access and polarity, but do not use it alone to pronounce the battery good or bad. Surface charge, temperature, recent loads, and sleep state affect it.

If the battery is frozen, swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, or smells strongly of sulfur, stop charging and isolate the area according to battery-safety procedures. Protect eyes and skin, ventilate, and keep sparks and flames away. Modern Maserati electrical systems also require the approved connection points and support strategy.

Interview the discharge history

Maserati asks about driver habits before parts. Record parking duration, trip length, use of parking or low-beam lights, interior-light settings, key proximity, remote-app activity, doors or trunk left open, accessories at power outlets, and whether the battery was disconnected where the telematics unit lacked GPS coverage. Model-specific details matter.

List every aftermarket tracker, dashcam, alarm, audio amplifier, charger, lighting module, OBD device, and recent repair. Ask whether the symptom followed storage, a software update, bodywork, battery replacement, or repeated short trips. The interview does not prove a draw, but it determines what should be reproduced.

Photograph the label and inspect the BDU

Save a clear battery-label image showing part number, chemistry, amp-hour rating, and CCA standard. Entering 850 EN as though it were another test standard can distort the result. Confirm whether the installed battery type and rating match the vehicle configuration.

Inspect the battery casing, hold-down, positive and negative terminals, chassis ground, and Battery Distribution Unit. Maserati calls out corrosion, looseness, arcing marks, and melted locking material. A poor high-current connection can mimic a weak battery during cranking and interfere with charging. Do not tighten or disconnect pyrotechnic or monitored battery components outside the workshop procedure.

Save a whole-vehicle scan before charging

Low voltage can set faults across many modules, but one module that remains awake can also discharge the battery. Save the complete report with timestamps before clearing. Note communication failures, terminal-status faults, door/latch inputs, telematics behavior, and energy-management messages.

Do not replace every module named by low-voltage codes. Sort faults by first occurrence, voltage, and recurrence after a stable supply is restored. The as-arrived scan is evidence of the discharge event; the post-charge scan tests what remains.

Match the charger to battery chemistry

Identify lead-acid, AGM, EFB, or other approved chemistry from the label and vehicle data. Use a compatible professional charger at the designated points and follow Maserati’s safety and charging rules. A deeply discharged battery may need a controlled recovery mode; a charger that immediately declares “full” may not have delivered a complete recharge.

Record starting voltage, charger mode, maximum current, time, interruptions, temperature, and completion status. Do not charge a damaged battery or use an unapproved desulfation mode while connected to sensitive vehicle electronics.

Respect the four-hour interval

Maserati requires the final diagnostic test after full recharge and a wait of at least four hours. Do not leave a maintainer attached during that evaluation. Preserve the time charging ended, the time final testing began, ambient temperature, and any vehicle access during the interval.

Compare condition, measured conductance/CCA, cranking behavior, and charging response using the correct battery inputs. A healthy final result after a poor starting test suggests discharge or connection history needs attention. A consistently poor final result after verified full recharge is more meaningful than the arrival result.

Investigate sleep current after repeat events

For frequent discharge or a recent repeat visit, Maserati instructs a parasitic-draw test and cites sleep current below 70 mA in the bulletin’s context. Do not export that number to every model or measure it immediately after key-off. Modules may need a defined sleep period, and opening a door or polling the network can wake them.

Use a current clamp or fused series method appropriate to the expected current, maintain required vehicle latches without defeating safety, and log long enough to see wake cycles. Pulling fuses randomly can reset the responsible module. Correlate current steps with module/network activity and current wiring information.

Compare the final test with the original complaint

After repair or charging, verify a rested start, voltage drop, charging behavior, terminal temperature, and absence of recurring module faults. Smart charging may allow near-battery voltage at idle under some conditions; judge commanded behavior and load response rather than one generic alternator number.

Repeat the owner’s parking interval when practical and review sleep-current logs. The outcome should explain both tests: why the battery was low on arrival and why it now retains enough charge. A new battery without a resolved draw is merely a fresh reserve waiting to be consumed.
