Record the clicking before waking the vehicle

Walk around the parked vehicle without touching it and note whether the clicking is strongest near the rear or trailer-control area. Write down how long the vehicle has been parked, whether a trailer was recently connected and whether any aftermarket towing accessory remains plugged in. Restore the battery without closing the case

A battery can be damaged by repeated deep discharge, so a software cause does not guarantee that the battery remains serviceable. Conversely, replacing a failed battery without addressing the awake module can produce the same no-start days later. Record state of charge, measured condition and charging-system results as a separate layer of the diagnosis, not as a verdict on the drain.

Confirm the exact Ford model and year

Ford SSM 54534 is not a blanket statement for every vehicle with a tow package. Its list covers some 2021–2025 F-150s, 2022–2025 Expeditions and Navigators, 2023–2025 F-Super Duty trucks, 2024–2025 Rangers and 2026 Transits. Confirm the VIN, model year and installed trailer module before leaning on the bulletin. A similar sound on an Explorer, an older truck or a vehicle with nonfactory trailer wiring needs its own service information. Applicability is a gate; similarity is only a clue.

Let every module reach its true sleep state

Modern vehicles do not become electrically quiet the instant the key is switched off. Latches, telematics, security and retained-accessory functions may remain active while control modules negotiate sleep. Check the TRM software part number in FDRS

In Professional Technician System, Ford directs the technician to Vehicle Software under the Diagnostics tab and then to the TRM. The four named software part numbers are PC3T-19J297-BF, PC3T-19J297-FF, ML3T-19J297-CD and ML3T-19J297-GD. Photograph or export the actual result. A module name alone is not enough; the software suffix is what opens this narrow repair branch. If the installed number is different, SSM 54534 sends the technician to Workshop Manual section 414-01 for normal diagnosis rather than promising an update.

Update only the four listed software levels

When one of the four levels is present, the repair is TRM reprogramming through the current FDRS routine with stable programming voltage. This is not a consumer reset, battery disconnect or generic OBD code clear. Save a pre-scan, support the vehicle voltage within Ford’s limits, follow every on-screen instruction and record the new software identity. If programming is interrupted, use the factory recovery path rather than cycling power repeatedly. Trailer accessories should remain out of the equation until the vehicle-side repair and sleep behavior are verified.

Verify silence and the next cold start

After programming, clear only the codes the procedure permits, switch the vehicle off and recreate the original parked configuration. Verify that the clicking stops, current settles through the expected sleep stages and the battery retains enough charge for the next cold start. If the draw remains, reopen 414-01 instead of declaring the update unsuccessful by instinct: an aftermarket brake controller, corroded trailer connector or unrelated module may be a second fault. The best closing record pairs the before sound/current trace with the same observations after repair.

The quietest part of this diagnosis is also the most important: let the vehicle show what it does while nobody touches it. Stop repeated jump-start attempts if cables, the battery or a connection becomes hot. A sound recording, a preserved sleep-current trace and the exact TRM software number can distinguish a repeatable Ford software condition from a weak battery or an unrelated trailer circuit. That is a far stronger repair case than replacing the battery and hoping the parking-lot clicking never returns.
