Test the truck with the approved simulator
The decisive truck-side check uses GM’s EL-52641 trailer simulator or the current approved equivalent. If the truck fails with the approved simulator, continue truck diagnosis; do not send the customer to the trailer shop simply because a Hydrastar unit is present.
Do not repair the truck if it passes
If the truck operates correctly with the simulator, GM says no truck repair is needed under this route. Record the pass result and reconnect the actual trailer only after its brake system is safe to test. This protects innocent controller, wiring and module parts on the vehicle. It also gives the trailer specialist a useful boundary: the fault arises from the real trailer combination or its interface, not from a truck that failed the same known load. Warranty responsibility differs across the connector, so documentation matters.
Inspect Hydrastar voltage-spike evidence
GM describes a voltage spike on the blue brake-command circuit 47 from the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic system that can interfere with diagnostics. A scope with appropriate protection is better suited than a simple meter for a brief transient, but the trailer facility and Hydrastar should confirm the condition. Check connector grounds, power and routing before attributing every disturbance to the actuator. Do not pierce sealed wiring casually or put test equipment where it can short the brake command. Static continuity can be normal while the momentary event remains.
Install an adapter only through the trailer-side decision
The communication identifies Hydrastar adapter module 381-7074 as the trailer-side remedy only when the trailer facility or manufacturer confirms the spike condition. It is not a universal accessory for every C1114 or every EOH trailer. Follow Hydrastar’s installation and compatibility instructions and inspect the complete hydraulic actuator/brake system separately. GM states trailer repairs are not covered by the vehicle warranty under this bulletin, so obtain approval before work and keep truck and trailer line items clear.
Reconnect and verify at low and normal brake effort
Reconnect the proven trailer, verify plug retention and test first in a controlled low-speed area with an appropriate load and safety plan. Check light pedal, normal pedal and manual controller inputs while watching brake response and warnings. Confirm no C1114 returns after the monitor has had a chance to run. A warning-free dash is not enough if braking feel remains wrong. Document simulator result, trailer diagnosis, adapter status and final road test so the next towing combination can be evaluated without repeating assumptions.
C1114 becomes manageable when the towing combination is uncoupled logically before it is uncoupled physically. Protect braking safety, preserve the light-pedal pattern, prove the truck with the approved simulator and send a passing truck’s evidence across the connector to the trailer specialist.
