EyeSight is a group of functions, not a single lamp. Note whether adaptive cruise, pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, or lane centering became unavailable, and whether ordinary braking, steering, and engine operation remained normal. Follow the owner’s manual for every red or stop-now warning.
The system assists the driver; it never replaces attention, braking, or lane checks. Until the fault is resolved, increase following distance and avoid relying on a disabled feature. Photograph the warning only while parked. If the windshield is damaged, fogged, dirty around the camera, or recently replaced, record that separately because it can open a different visibility or calibration path.

Subaru limits symptom number one to 2022–2023 Forester vehicles. After exposure to high temperature and humidity without operation, the EyeSight camera’s cooling fans may become inoperative and B28C7 may be detected. The code alone is still not the final gate.
The technician reads Fault Freeze Frame Data from the EyeSight stereo camera assembly. If B28C7 is absent, the bulletin sends diagnosis to the service manual. If it is present, the failure-detail value determines whether the software path opens. This protects owners from an automatic camera replacement based on one remembered message.
Read the B28C7 failure-detail code before deciding
The bulletin identifies detail code 00EC for low fan speed and 00EB for B28C7 detected during a high-temperature halt. Those values support reprogramming when the other prerequisites are met. A different detail code returns the diagnosis to the applicable service manual.
Preserve the freeze frame before clearing or disconnecting the 12V battery. Ask the shop to print the code, detail value, camera temperature, and software identity together. “B28C7 found” is incomplete; “B28C7 with the qualifying detail under the recorded thermal condition” explains why the branch was chosen.
Keep 2022–2024 E5 in the counter-and-status branch
Symptom number two covers 2022–2024 Forester vehicles that enter temporary halt mode with E5 recorded by the stereo camera. Subaru uses data-monitor criteria, including temporary-halt counts and specific camera-status ranges. If those values do not match, the technician follows the ordinary E5 diagnostic path.
This branch reads more like a pattern than a single switch. One counter shows repetition, while status fields describe the camera state associated with those events. Do not translate a hexadecimal status into a part name without Subaru’s current table. The useful owner contribution is the recurrence pattern and weather history; the diagnostic tool supplies the internal context.
Check camera temperature and software version together
Before programming, Subaru requires the technician to verify that the installed software is eligible, the camera temperature is below 80°C/176°F, and battery support is at the specified state. If the camera already has the latest software, reprogramming is not required. Attempting to load an inappropriate file can damage the assembly.
Cooling the cabin enough for the warning to disappear is therefore only an operating observation. The camera must also be inside the programming temperature limit, and its exact control/recognition software identity must be checked. Model year controls which file applies. Avoid relying on a screenshot from another Forester, even when the dashboard message looks identical.
Test the ordinary battery without confusing it with programming support
A pre-appointment battery test can reveal a weak 12V foundation, but it is not the power source Subaru specifies for flashing. The bulletin calls for approved Midtronics equipment in Power Supply Mode, stable at 13.5 volts, with lighting, audio, HVAC, heaters, and defroster off. It warns that voltage above the stated window can abort programming.
This distinction prevents a common category error. A battery tester reports condition, starting, or charging performance; a regulated support unit holds a controlled voltage while multiple modules remain awake. Even a healthy battery should not be asked to carry an uninterrupted reflash alone. If the support unit says the battery needs charging, charge it before continuing.
Verify the update without adding an unnecessary calibration
After programming, confirm the intended software identity, clear only relevant codes, and check that the original thermal/humidity condition no longer creates B28C7 or E5. A cool indoor scan is only the first confirmation; document the result after a realistic parked interval and warm-weather exposure when practical.
Subaru says EyeSight camera recalibration is not required after this reprogramming procedure. That statement does not apply if the camera or windshield was replaced, the mount moved, collision damage exists, or another service operation requires calibration. If the warning returns with current software, preserve the new freeze frame and reopen diagnosis instead of repeating the update without new evidence.
