A 2017–2020 Mazda CX-5 that will not crank with P0615:12 or B112A:12 needs one unusual history question: was the windshield tinted, repaired, or replaced? Preserve the no-crank scene

Confirm the distinction between no crank and cranks-but-will-not-start. Record cluster brightness, warning messages, key recognition, gear display, brake-lamp response, relay sounds, and whether a jump changes the result. Save all module codes and freeze or event data before battery disconnection.

If there is water near a fuse panel, heat, smoke, or electrical odor, stop attempting to start the vehicle and disconnect power only under the approved Mazda safety procedure. A no-crank CX-5 in an unsafe location should be transported, not repeatedly jump-started.

P0615:12 is a starter-relay circuit malfunction in Mazda’s alert; B112A:12 is an IG2-relay circuit malfunction. The shared suffix and no-crank event direct attention to circuitry, but they do not name the failed component.

Build the glass-work timeline

Follow gravity to connector C-04

Mazda SA-051/20 connects the two code patterns to water contamination or corrosion at C-04. Inspect the windshield edge and the path behind the dash without flooding the cabin. Look for washed dust, tide marks, green or white corrosion, dark terminals, wet tape, and droplets above—not just at—the connector.

Photograph both halves before cleaning or separating them. If corrosion is absent, the alert says to exit this path and continue normal diagnostic information for the stored code. A dry connector today does not exclude an intermittent leak, but it prevents an automatic repair conclusion.

Measure only after identifying the terminal

Isolate power as the Mazda procedure requires before disconnecting a wet connector. After inspection and approved cleaning or repair, use non-damaging probes. Compare voltage on both sides of a loaded connection; an open-circuit 12-volt reading can disappear when the circuit is asked to work.

Continuity alone does not prove a wire can carry load. Likewise, applying battery power to “see what moves” can damage a low-current driver. The wiring diagram, component state, and connector test plan must exist before the probe touches metal.

Exit the bulletin when the evidence is absent

If C-04 has no contamination or corrosion, return to Mazda’s diagnostic path for P0615:12 or B112A:12. That may include battery, starting interlocks, relay command, harness, grounds, or module tests. Do not wet the connector deliberately to reproduce the event.

The alert is a narrow pattern, not a recall and not a promise of warranty coverage. Mazda’s document states that repairs for this concern were not covered under the policy described there; current coverage should be checked directly from the VIN and repair date.

Send the shop a moisture-and-voltage file

Include VIN, exact codes and status, no-crank versus no-start behavior, battery test, glass/tint invoices, rain or wash timing, moisture photographs, C-04 images before disturbance, and any loaded voltage-drop results with terminal and circuit identified. List what changed after drying or movement.

That file lets the shop connect body-leak correction with electrical repair. Fixing only the corroded terminal while leaving the entry path open invites a repeat failure.

Verify dry starts and the repaired water path

Verification has two halves. Electrically, the engine must crank normally through repeated hot and cold starts, the relevant codes must not return, and voltage drop must remain within Mazda specifications. Physically, a controlled water test must show no moisture entering the original path.

Recheck after the carpet and connector area have had time to dry. A single start after cleaning does not prove the windshield seal is repaired, and a dry windshield test does not prove the damaged circuit was restored.
