Know when the tick means do not restart

Tell the recovery operator not to restart the engine unnecessarily; the untouched oil and filter may contain evidence the workshop needs.

Record the noise and warning combination

Record a short video once, preferably capturing the noise and any low-pressure indication together as Bentley requests. Note whether the sound is from the upper or lower engine, cold or hot, and whether it follows engine speed. Verify oil history before pressure testing

Before any pressure measurement, verify oil level, correct specification, filter and service interval. Inspect for external leaks and contamination without discarding the filter or oil evidence. Mechanical pressure testing is useful only when Bentley’s current procedure calls for it and the engine can be operated without unacceptable risk. Use the exact test point, adapter, temperature and rpm specification; isolate the original sender circuit rather than damaging it. Stop immediately if pressure is unsafe or the noise worsens. One normal gauge moment does not erase an intermittent warning or debris finding.

Inspect the sump and filter for metal

For the accompanied-warning/misfire scenario, Bentley directs removal of the bottom oil-sump section and inspection for large metal debris. Drain into a clean suitable container, renew the oil filter and never reuse the engine oil. Cut or inspect the filter only through the approved method, looking for fine metal while avoiding contamination from tools or the pan. Photograph material with scale and location before moving it. Cap every open connection against dirt and moisture. Debris size, color and magnet response can be useful observations, but laboratory identification or the factory review—not visual confidence alone—assigns its origin.

Open the valvetrain only with authorization

If debris is present, raise a Full Technical DISS and obtain Powertrain Technical Manager authorization before continuing. Only then remove both cam covers under the applicable repair group and inspect rocker arms, roller bearings and valvetrain for visible wear or damage. Photograph each bank systematically and keep parts in position unless instructed. Bentley describes rocker-arm roller-bearing wear as a mechanism that can disrupt valve operation, cause ticking and misfire, move hydraulic lifters outside their range and contribute to momentary pressure reduction. That technical link guides inspection; it does not authorize major engine parts without review.

Submit evidence and verify without hiding debris

Submit the sound/pressure videos, oil-contamination photos, sump-debris evidence and authorized valvetrain findings to Technical DISS, referencing completion of the bulletin. Preserve replaced filters and components as directed. After an approved repair, install every single-use item, torque fasteners, fill with new correct oil and prime or start only through the service procedure. Verify pressure, scan for misfire and listen under controlled conditions without trying to hide residual debris. The final report should explain which scenario opened the path and what physical evidence—not merely P0300—supported the repair.

The valuable first repair action may be preventing another engine start. One clean recording, an untouched scan and carefully preserved oil debris can show Bentley Product Support far more than a freshly cleared P0300. Pressure equipment has a narrow supporting role only when the approved branch and engine condition permit it. The owner is best served when teardown follows evidence and authorization, not fear of an expensive sound.
