Obey the red warning before interpreting it

Pull over safely and reduce the chance of engine damage. If there is steam, coolant loss, a sweet odor, abnormal noise or measured overheating, switch off and arrange service. Do not open the coolant reservoir while hot. Once the engine is fully cool, note the coolant level and visible leakage without reaching near belts or fans. Even when the warning clears after a restart, preserve it as a real event; an intermittent sensor and an intermittent leak can both disappear before the hood is opened.

Save every coolant and head-temperature code

Record which are active or sporadic, their freeze-frame, coolant and head-temperature data, battery voltage and every companion code. A single noun in a generic code description cannot distinguish moisture inside the sender from wiring, connector or genuine cooling behavior.

Match Audi’s narrow production boundary

The scope is narrow: 2019–2020 A8; specified 2021 A8 and S8 ranges; 2020 and specified 2021 SQ7, SQ8 and RS Q8; and specified 2021 RS 6 Avant/RS 7 ranges. The complete VIN limits in 2062951/4 matter. Follow the signal from G407 to the ECM

Use Guided Fault Finding to trace G407 through its connector, wiring, reference and signal relationship to the ECM. Compare sensor data with a believable cold-soak baseline and independent cooling evidence. An open or ground-short code that reacts to harness movement deserves connector and conductor inspection; an implausible value may require a comparison across operating states. Keep hands and test leads clear of hot surfaces and moving components. The signal story should agree with what the engine and coolant are physically doing.

Inspect the tip O-ring as physical evidence

Audi specifically says to inspect the O-ring directly on the tip of the G407 sender and replace the sender if that O-ring is visibly damaged or pinched. That is positive physical evidence, not an invitation to remove every sensor preemptively. Removal belongs to a cooled, depressurized system following the repair manual, with contamination controlled. Photograph the seal condition. If the seal is intact, do not manufacture a conclusion; continue the current guided tests and inspect for moisture or connection evidence only as Audi directs.

Measure only through the current wiring plan

Only measure at pins and states defined by the current wiring diagram. Verify meter ground and lead condition before condemning a low reading, and avoid piercing insulation or spreading terminals. One resistance or voltage taken with the fault dormant cannot prove a sporadic sender healthy. Wiggle or thermal testing must remain within the approved plan. If the physical system is genuinely hot or losing coolant, electrical normality does not end the cooling-system diagnosis.

Verify coolant behavior and signal stability separately

After any approved repair, restore coolant correctly, check for leaks and remove air according to Audi procedure. Observe both physical temperature behavior and G407 data through a safe warm-up. Give the technician the VIN, warning photo, complete ECM report, code status, cold coolant level, measured temperature evidence, recent cooling work and any weather/wash pattern. Ask for the G407 O-ring finding and final data trace. That chain helps the owner get a warning they can trust again without letting either a red lamp or a tiny seal tell more of the story than it proved.
