How to Use the AUTOOL AST605 Brake Fluid Bleeder

The AUTOOL AST605 brake fluid bleeder feeds new brake fluid from a removable external container and applies controlled pressure through a reservoir adapter. Prime its filling path away from the vehicle before the first use, then let the exact vehicle procedure—not a gauge photo or generic bleeding rule—control the fluid, pressure, service-point order, electronic state and final checks.

AST605 is a single-output machine: you collect removed fluid at one wheel or hydraulic service point at a time. Its operating controls are ON/OFF, Start, a pressure-regulation knob and a pressure gauge. Its fluid path uses a suction hose and a pressure-balance hose at the new-fluid container, plus a filling hose to the reservoir adapter. Keep those identities clear throughout the job.

Brake hydraulics are safety-critical. Use this procedure only if you are qualified to perform the exact vehicle service, have the complete current vehicle information and can keep the vehicle stationary whenever the final result is uncertain. Stop before opening the system if the required fluid, adapter, pressure, sequence, diagnostic state or release test is unknown.

AST605 workflow at a glance

The safe order is:

  1. approve the vehicle, repair state and exact procedure;
  2. verify the AST605, its nameplate and grounded electrical supply;
  3. prepare the new fluid, adapter, tools, PPE, work area and waste controls;
  4. identify and inspect the real external-supply fluid path;
  5. secure the new-fluid container and place both supply hoses correctly;
  6. prime the filling path off the vehicle until discharge remains bubble-free;
  7. stop and reach stable zero before changing the priming connection;
  8. install the exact reservoir adapter and prove a leak-free boundary;
  9. establish only the vehicle-prescribed pressure condition;
  10. prepare the first prescribed service point and capture path;
  11. bleed and close one required point at a time under continuous observation;
  12. close the final bleeder before stopping machine output;
  13. reach stable zero before releasing the filling hose or adapter;
  14. restore and verify the complete brake system before movement; and
  15. control waste, care for the tool and record the result.

If any step fails its completion check, do not skip ahead. Close any open bleeder, stop the pressure process safely, reach stable zero with the pressure boundary intact and correct the cause under the exact vehicle and AST605 instructions.

What the AST605 does—and what it cannot decide

AST605 moves new brake fluid from an external container into an eligible brake or clutch hydraulic system through a sealed reservoir adapter. Pressure-assisted flow can let one qualified operator work at a service point without a second person pumping the pedal, but it does not make the job unattended.

Someone must continuously see the clean-fluid reserve, gauge, reservoir adapter, filling hose, active bleeder and used-fluid catch path. Use a second observer whenever one person cannot see that complete boundary.

The machine cannot decide whether routine pressure bleeding is appropriate after a dry system, major hydraulic-component replacement, wrong-fluid contamination or an unresolved leak. It also cannot supply a universal ABS, EPB, brake-by-wire, regenerative-braking or electronic-booster routine.

Those jobs may require a particular ignition state, scan-tool activation, pump or valve sequence, repeated circuit, calibration or final test. Begin them only when the complete exact vehicle procedure expressly supports the method and provides every required step.

Do not turn a machine capability into a vehicle setting. Read the delivered nameplate and instructions, then use only a vehicle-prescribed pressure that also remains inside the verified limits of that exact unit, adapter and reservoir. If those requirements cannot all be satisfied, do not pressurize the system.

Fluid, PPE, tools and work area

Use sufficient new, unopened brake fluid of the exact vehicle specification, with reserve for priming and the complete vehicle procedure. Do not mix fluid families and do not use fuel, cleaner, mineral hydraulic fluid, recovered fluid or an unidentified liquid in the AST605.

Wear eye protection and gloves compatible with the selected fluid. Keep the fluid label and safety data information available. Protect painted surfaces, electrical equipment and the floor; prepare compatible spill-control materials and a lawful waste container. Brake fluid can injure people, damage finishes and create a slip or contamination hazard.

Place the machine on a dry, clean, level and stable surface where ventilation and lighting are adequate and bystanders cannot enter the work zone. Support the vehicle by the approved lifting points and method. Route every hose so it has slack through the full work position and cannot contact heat, sharp edges, moving parts or a lift. Never let the filling hose pull on the reservoir adapter.

Prepare the correct bleeder wrench, a snug clear hose, a stable compatible used-fluid bottle, reservoir protection, clean lint-controlled materials, labels and the tools required by the exact vehicle procedure. Keep the new-fluid supply and every used-fluid container physically separate.

Locate the physical controls and connections before use. Operate only controls present on the delivered AST605 panel and matched by its instructions.

Phase A: qualify and prepare

Step 1: Approve the vehicle procedure and initial condition

Read the complete current brake or clutch hydraulic procedure for the exact vehicle, model year, equipment and repair state. Confirm that pressure-assisted reservoir bleeding is permitted and identify every required service point, electronic state, tool, opening/closing instruction, endpoint and final check.

Inspect the initial condition before you disturb it. An unexplained leak, falling reservoir level, warning indicator, soft or sinking pedal, contaminated/unknown fluid or recent major hydraulic opening is not a routine exchange by default. Identify and correct the underlying condition through the applicable diagnostic or recovery procedure.

Do not assume that a pressure bleeder alone can recover a completely dry master cylinder or ABS hydraulic unit. Do not improvise an electronic pump, valve, EPB or scan-tool sequence. If the required process is not complete and applicable, keep the vehicle stationary and obtain qualified service information.

Completion check: The exact procedure expressly permits the planned method, every vehicle-controlled value and state is recorded, and the initial hydraulic condition is suitable for the defined job.

Step 2: Match the AST605, nameplate, supply and instructions

Confirm AST605 on the machine and compare its layout with the ON/OFF control, Start control, fuse, regulator, gauge, external-container holder and three hose paths described above. Do not proceed with a similar-looking AST model or instructions for a different panel.

Read the actual nameplate. Match its voltage and fuse requirements to the outlet and plug, and verify an intact protective earth. Never assume that the unit switches voltage automatically or test compatibility by trying a different supply.

With the unit unplugged, inspect the cord, plug, enclosure, fuse holder, controls, gauge, hose fittings, quick coupling, holder and strain relief. Remove the machine from service for cuts, exposed conductors, looseness, cracks, impact damage, heat discoloration, fluid intrusion, corrosion or a gauge that does not rest correctly.

Completion check: The machine is positively identified as AST605; its delivered instructions, controls, nameplate, plug, grounded supply and visible electrical condition agree.

Step 3: Prepare the vehicle, work area, fluid and tools

Protect the vehicle finish and establish safe access to every prescribed service point. Position the machine where the gauge, external new-fluid container and reservoir connection remain visible. Confirm that raising or lowering the vehicle will not stretch, pinch or move the filling hose.

Set out new, unopened exact-specification fluid in its labelled container. Estimate the amount from the vehicle procedure, then add enough reserve for off-vehicle priming and safe continuous coverage of both supply hoses. Do not use a generic container volume as the job quantity.

Prepare PPE, spill controls, the exact reservoir adapter and seal, bleeder tools, clear hose, restrained used-fluid bottle, labels and waste container. Keep dirt, water, lint and used fluid away from every clean-side item. Establish a communication method if a second observer will watch the machine while you work at a wheel.

Completion check: The vehicle is safely supported, all work points are accessible, exact fluid and adapter are confirmed, and every tool, person and container has a controlled position.

Step 4: Identify, reconcile and inspect every AST605 part

Identify the external new-fluid container and its holder. Trace the suction hose from the machine to its pickup end, the pressure-balance hose to its container end and the filling hose to its quick coupling. Do not start until you can distinguish all three without relying on color or guesswork.

Inspect each hose along its full length. Reject cuts, stiffness, swelling, abrasion, contamination, loose fittings, damaged couplers, blocked ends or unapproved repairs. Inspect the container for chemical compatibility, cleanliness, cracks and a stable fit in the holder.

Inspect the adapter profile, threads or locking features and sealing element. Inspect the clear capture hose and used-fluid bottle independently; where the bottle is stored on the machine does not determine its safe operating position.

Check the actual package against the packing list for your order. Do not assume that a tester, expanded adapter case or every pictured item is standard equipment. Replace any missing or mismatched pressure/fluid component with the exact approved part before use.

Completion check: Every required clean-side, pressure-side and collection component is present, correctly identified, clean, intact and matched to the actual job.

Phase B: establish an air-free AST605 fluid path

Step 5: Secure the external new-fluid container and route both supply hoses

Keep the AST605 switched off and unplugged. Place the opened new-fluid container upright in the machine’s holder or exact approved support so it cannot tip, slide or be pulled. Follow the selected fluid’s handling limits and minimize unnecessary exposure to air and contamination.

Place both the suction hose and pressure-balance hose into their correct positions at the bottom of the container. Keep them free of kinks, blockage and confusion. Make sure the ends will remain covered throughout priming and the complete service. Route the filling hose without tension and keep its coupling clean.

Do not pour fluid into an assumed internal machine tank. The clean supply for this AST605 workflow is the removable external container. Do not depend on an empty-container feature as the working level control; its exact trigger and recovery behavior are not a substitute for continuous observation.

Secure the external new-fluid container and keep the suction and pressure-balance hoses correctly placed near the bottom. Continue watching the reserve; the image does not set a universal bottle size or quantity.

Completion check: The container is stable, the suction hose and pressure-balance hose remain covered and unkinked, the filling hose is clean and slack, and sufficient reserve is continuously visible.

Step 6: Prime the filling path away from the vehicle

Connect the priming adapter specified for the delivered AST605 to the filling-hose coupling, but do not install it on the vehicle. Position and hold its outlet inside a stable compatible collector so discharged fluid cannot spray onto people, paint or electrical parts.

Set the pressure-regulation control to the documented low starting position for the delivered unit. Connect the verified grounded supply with dry hands and switch the AST605 on. Operate Start as instructed while watching the supply reserve, suction hose, pressure-balance hose, filling hose, connections, adapter outlet and gauge.

Continue only until discharge is steady and remains free of bubbles. Do not use a fixed number of seconds as proof; elapsed time cannot establish that the complete clean-side path is full. Stop for no flow, persistent air after rechecking the setup, a falling or uncovered supply, leakage, hose movement, unstable pressure, abnormal noise, heat, odor, smoke, tripping or fluid near electrical parts.

Completion check: Fluid leaves the adapter outlet in a steady bubble-free stream, both supply hoses remain safely covered and every machine-side boundary remains dry and stable.

Step 7: Stop priming and prove stable zero

Stop the delivery control, switch the machine off as the delivered instructions require and unplug it with dry hands. Keep the adapter, filling hose and all pressure-side fittings assembled while the gauge returns to zero. Wait until the pointer remains at zero; a quiet pump or a pointer that only passes through zero is not enough.

Only after stable zero may you release the priming adapter from the filling-hose coupling. Control drips and keep the primed coupling clean.

If the gauge does not reach or hold zero, leave the pressure boundary assembled. Follow the exact regulator-unloading instruction for the delivered AST605 without loosening a fitting to vent it. If that instruction is unavailable, cannot be completed safely or does not resolve the condition, isolate the machine and obtain qualified service.

Completion check: Power is controlled, the gauge remains stably at zero and the primed filling hose stays clean and full without any live connection being loosened.

Phase C: seal the reservoir and service the prescribed points

Step 8: Prepare the reservoir and install the exact adapter

Protect the surrounding paint. Clean loose dirt from around the reservoir and cap without allowing water, fibers, cleaner or debris inside. Confirm the fluid specification again before opening the reservoir. Inspect the cap, diaphragm, neck, threads or bayonet features and sealing surface.

Compare the reservoir with the approved adapter profile and gasket. Install the exact adapter squarely by its intended method. Never force or cross-thread a near fit, use machine pressure to pull it into place or add an improvised seal. A broad make/model list or visual resemblance is not proof of fit.

Completion check: The reservoir area is clean, the exact adapter sits squarely on the intended sealing features, and no force, distortion, debris or damaged seal is present.

Step 9: Couple the filling hose and prove the pressure boundary

Keep every vehicle bleeder closed. Connect the primed filling-hose quick coupling fully to the installed adapter and positively verify its lock. Route the hose without tension, twisting, heat, moving-part contact or a path that can pull the adapter when the vehicle or operator moves.

Put the regulator at the documented low starting position for the delivered unit. Connect power and operate the AST605 according to its controls while increasing only toward the vehicle-prescribed condition. Stop increasing as soon as that condition is reached. Never exceed the vehicle limit because the machine can indicate or produce a higher value.

Watch the gauge, external new-fluid reserve, both supply hoses, filling hose, quick coupling, adapter, reservoir and surrounding finish. Before any bleeder opens, hold only long enough to prove that the entire boundary remains dry, square and stable. Pulsating delivery may be a machine characteristic, but an unexplained surge, collapse or drift has no universal acceptable envelope and must be treated as abnormal.

If pressure does not build, release Start rather than repeatedly cycling it. At stable zero, check the clean-fluid reserve, both supply hoses, regulator starting position and visible leaks. A mismatched adapter, air, damaged hose, machine fault or vehicle condition may also be responsible. Do not raise pressure by guess.

Stop immediately for seepage, pressure loss or drift, adapter movement, reservoir distortion, hose expansion, abnormal sound/heat/odor or fluid loss. Close any open bleeder, stop output and return to stable zero before touching the setup.

Completion check: The exact vehicle-approved condition is stable with every bleeder closed, and the complete machine-to-reservoir boundary stays stationary, dry and leak-free.

Step 10: Prepare the first prescribed service point and catch path

Go to the first point named by the exact vehicle procedure. Do not substitute a generic farthest-wheel-first, nearest-wheel-first or diagonal order. Some calipers or hydraulic components have multiple bleeders, and the exact order among them matters.

Identify and clean around the bleeder without introducing debris. Inspect for corrosion, damage or rounding and use the correct-size tool. Do not force a seized bleeder. Fit a snug clear hose and route it into a stable compatible used-fluid bottle where flow and bubbles can be observed without a spill.

Keep the hose clear of moving, hot or sharp parts. Secure the bottle against tipping or pulling and do not create a sealed unqualified pressure vessel. Make sure the machine observer can see the external supply, gauge, adapter and filling hose while the service-point operator can see the bleeder and catch path.

Completion check: The correct service point is clean and serviceable, the tool fits, and the clear hose and used-fluid bottle are stable, visible and spill-controlled.

Step 11: Bleed and close each required point one at a time

Open only the prescribed bleeder by the specified amount and method. Observe flow through the clear hose while you or a second operator continuously watches the external new-fluid reserve, suction hose, pressure-balance hose, gauge, reservoir adapter, filling hose, coupling, active service point and all leak paths.

Keep enough new fluid to cover both supply hoses at all times. Do not depend on empty-container protection or one-person capability as a substitute for watching the supply. If the reserve approaches an uncertain level, close the active bleeder, stop the machine safely and reach stable zero before correcting the supply.

If either hose uncovers or air enters the machine or vehicle, mark the normal cycle incomplete and follow the exact air-recovery or full re-bleed procedure.

Use the vehicle-prescribed endpoint. Stable bubble-free flow may be one necessary observation, but it is not the whole acceptance test. Fluid color alone cannot prove the correct chemistry, quantity or removal of all air. Bubbles may also enter around bleeder threads or a loose clear-hose fit, so inspect the external catch path rather than assuming every bubble came from inside the circuit.

When the endpoint is met, close the bleeder by the exact method before moving to another point. Apply only the prescribed final torque and restore its protective cap as required. Check for seepage. Repeat at the next point in the exact sequence, maintaining the same supply, pressure and leak observations.

Completion check: Every completed point met its exact endpoint, was closed and externally verified before moving on, and the AST605 never lost its clean-fluid reserve, stable boundary or controlled catch path.

Stop: Close the active bleeder and stop safely for low supply, either supply hose uncovering, air entry, no flow, persistent unexplained bubbles, detached clear hose, filling-hose movement, adapter leakage, pressure collapse/drift, a damaged bleeder, external fluid leak or electrical abnormality.

The vehicle procedure determines whether an interruption requires repeating one point, one circuit, every wheel or a diagnostic activation. A clear-looking hose does not cancel an air-entry event.

Step 12: Close the final bleeder before stopping output

At the final prescribed service point, maintain the external clean-fluid reserve and stable reservoir boundary until the complete vehicle endpoint is met. Close and tighten the bleeder by the exact service method. Confirm that it is closed and externally dry before stopping AST605 output or switching the machine off.

This sequence matters. Ending pressure while a bleeder remains open can allow air to enter the hydraulic path. Do not reverse the order because the fluid looks clean or no bubbles are visible.

Completion check: The final bleeder is closed, tightened and externally leak-free while the reservoir boundary is still controlled; only then is machine output stopped.

Phase D: return the vehicle and AST605 to a safe state

Step 13: Reach stable zero before disconnecting the reservoir

After the final bleeder is closed, stop delivery, switch the AST605 off and unplug it with dry hands as required. Keep the quick coupling and reservoir adapter assembled while the gauge falls to zero. Wait until the pointer remains at zero and the hose, coupling and adapter show no pressure effect.

If the gauge does not reach zero, keep the boundary intact and use only the regulator-unloading method stated for the delivered machine. Do not guess a knob direction from another revision and do not loosen a fitting to vent pressure. If the correct method is uncertain or zero still cannot be proved, isolate the area and obtain qualified service.

Once zero is stable, protect the reservoir and paint against drips. Release the filling-hose coupling by its intended mechanism, then remove the adapter squarely without allowing dirt into the reservoir.

Completion check: Power is controlled, the gauge remains stably at zero, and the filling hose and adapter are removed without spray, forced movement or contamination.

Step 14: Restore the reservoir and verify the brake system

Set the reservoir to the exact vehicle-specified final level using only the correct clean fluid. Inspect the diaphragm, cap, seal and opening, then install them by the vehicle method. Control any exterior spill according to the fluid label, safety data sheet and vehicle-finish instructions.

Inspect the reservoir area, every disturbed hydraulic joint and each serviced bleeder or caliper for leakage. Complete the exact stationary pedal application and hold check in the required ignition, engine or booster state. Perform any required ABS, EPB, brake warning, scan-tool, fault-code, basic-setting or calibration step. Recheck the fluid level whenever the procedure requires it.

Do not move the vehicle with a soft, sinking or inconsistent pedal, a falling fluid level, leakage, a warning or fault, an incomplete diagnostic step, abnormal brake response or uncertainty about an air-entry recovery. A controlled functional or road test is allowed only for a qualified person after every stationary acceptance criterion passes and only under the exact service procedure.

Completion check: Final fluid level and cap state are correct, every disturbed point remains dry, pedal behavior and every warning/diagnostic check meet the vehicle criteria, and the release decision is recorded.

Step 15: Control waste, care for the tool and record the job

Treat all priming discharge and removed brake fluid as used material. Keep it in compatible closed and labelled containers, separate from the clean supply, and follow the fluid instructions and local hazardous-waste route. Never return priming or captured fluid to the vehicle or external new-fluid container.

With the AST605 unplugged and stably at zero, perform only the external care authorized for the delivered unit. Control drips; clean and inspect the accessible holder, hoses, coupling, adapters, used-fluid bottle, cord and enclosure with compatible methods.

Keep liquid away from electrical parts. Do not invent an internal flushing chemical, open or modify the enclosure, substitute a fuse or adjust or repair the pump, gauge, earth or pressure control.

Storage requirements can depend on the delivered revision and fluid. Follow the exact current instruction for residual fluid and preservation. If it does not clearly answer your condition, isolate the tool and ask qualified manufacturer support instead of improvising. Store it unplugged, dry and protected from heat, humidity, impact, cord strain and hose damage.

What pressure should I set on the AST605?

Which brake fluid can I use?

Use new, unopened fluid of the exact vehicle specification and confirmed compatible with the delivered tool. There is no universal fluid-class choice. Never mix families or return priming/removed fluid to the clean supply.

Does brake fluid go inside the AST605?

The normal AST605 setup described here uses a removable external new-fluid container in its holder. What is the difference between the suction and pressure-balance hoses?
