Automotive Q&A
Injector balance testing: how do you compare drops without flooding a cylinder?
Review the evidence, add a focused answer, and distinguish confirmed measurements from assumptions.
We use guided injector balance on port and direct-injection systems, but repeated pulses can change rail pressure and add too much fuel. We need a rule for test order, pulse count and recovery between cylinders.
What makes the comparison valid and safe?
Follow the exact platform procedure. Begin with stable battery support and a defined initial pressure, use the same pulse width and count for each injector, and restore rail pressure to the same starting value before the next cylinder. Randomize or repeat the order if pressure or temperature drift could bias later cylinders. Disable the test when coolant, catalyst or fuel conditions make accumulation unsafe.
Record each starting and ending pressure, not just the drop. Afterward, clear excess fuel only through the approved process and inspect disturbed fittings for leaks.
Our sheet now rejects a comparison when starting pressures differ by more than the procedure allows. A supposed weak injector passed when retested from equal pressure, while a different injector consistently showed the real low drop. No extra pulses were needed.
