Smoke-machine pressure limits: how do you avoid turning a leak test into damage?

We have more technicians using the smoke machine for EVAP, intake, cooling-air and cabin-water investigations. The machine has a regulator and flow gauge, but the habit of using one pressure for every system has started to creep in. That is especially concerning on fuel tanks, diaphragms and systems that are normally measured in inches of water rather than psi.
What shop rule do you use for selecting pressure, and how do you document that the test stayed within the vehicle or component limit? I am looking for a process that remains useful across brands without inventing a universal number.
Our rule is that the service information sets the limit; the smoke machine only supplies flow below that limit. The worksheet records the system boundary, access point, specified maximum, regulator setting and observed flow. For EVAP work we use a gauge scaled for the very low pressure involved and command or isolate valves exactly as the test procedure requires.
We also prove the machine and adapters on a calibrated leak before blaming the vehicle. If no manufacturer limit is available, the test is paused rather than borrowing a pressure from another system. Components with delicate diaphragms, sealed batteries or high-voltage thermal circuits require their own approved procedure and equipment.
One useful wording change is to record pressure at the vehicle, not merely the regulator setting. A restriction in a long hose or adapter can make those values differ. Never use shop air directly on an EVAP system, and do not pressurize a fuel tank or battery enclosure outside the manufacturer’s stated procedure.
