Compressor failure: what decides whether the rest of the A/C circuit can be flushed?

When an A/C compressor fails mechanically, estimates often jump from “replace the compressor” to “replace almost everything” without documenting what was found. I want a more defensible inspection path. Besides visible metal at the compressor ports, what evidence determines which sections can be flushed and which need replacement?
I am particularly interested in parallel-flow condensers, receiver-driers, mufflers and electronically controlled compressors. How are you recording recovered oil condition and debris distribution before deciding on the repair scope?
First classify the failure: electrical control, seal leak, oil starvation or internal mechanical damage. Measure and photograph the recovered oil, inspect it through a clean filter, and check both compressor ports and the first downstream connection. Debris location matters more than the label “compressor failure.”
Only flush a component when the vehicle and equipment instructions permit it and when solvent can travel through every passage and be fully removed. Parallel-flow condensers, driers or accumulators, mufflers and many small multi-path components generally cannot be reliably cleaned after metal contamination. Replace the specified non-flushable parts, meter the correct oil quantity by component, evacuate, charge by weight and document clean outlet flow where flushing is allowed.
We added oil volume, color, odor and filter residue to the inspection sheet, along with a diagram showing where each line was opened. On the first case, metal was present beyond the compressor outlet and the condenser was a non-flushable parallel-flow design, so the expanded estimate was supported by evidence rather than assumption.
