Automotive Q&A
How should module software versions be recorded before and after programming?
Review the evidence, add a focused answer, and distinguish confirmed measurements from assumptions.
Programming reports currently say only “update completed.” That is not enough when a later technician needs to know whether the module was replaced, calibrated or merely retried. We want a compact version-control record.
Which identifiers and environmental checks belong in it?
Record VIN, module address and part number, hardware identifier, original software or calibration number, target package, programming application and version, interface serial number, campaign or service reference, and the final identifiers read back from the module. Include pre- and post-scan results, battery-support set point and minimum voltage, start and completion times, and any recovery step.
Save the successful session log where policy allows. “Completed” is an event; the before-and-after identifiers prove what changed. Do not program from an unverified file or interrupt a session to improve documentation after it starts.
The revised log caught a vehicle whose module already had the target calibration even though the complaint note requested an update. The team avoided an unnecessary flash and moved to the actual sensor diagnosis with the version evidence attached.
