Cooling-system combustion-gas test: what creates a false positive?

A block-test fluid changed color faintly after the funnel drew a small amount of coolant mist. The engine shows no overheat, pressure rise or cylinder imbalance. We need to avoid treating every color shift as a failed head gasket.
What controls make the test reliable?
Keep liquid coolant out of the reagent, use fresh fluid within its storage life and draw vapor from the specified point only after the engine reaches the test condition. Confirm the tool changes with a known combustion source and remains unchanged with ambient air. Chemical cleaners and exhaust contamination near the intake can also affect interpretation.
Use the result with cooling-system pressure behavior, cylinder leak testing, cold-start misfire data and borescope evidence. A contaminated reagent sample should be repeated, not averaged into a diagnosis.
The test was repeated with a separator that kept coolant mist out. The reagent stayed unchanged while the positive control worked. A cap that opened below specification explained the coolant complaint; no engine teardown was recommended.
