Smart charging swings from 12.4 to 15.1 V after a battery replacement

A 2018 Focus began showing wide charging-voltage swings after a battery replacement. There are no generator codes. The commanded voltage follows the measured value, but battery state of charge drops while scan data reports current flowing into the battery during a known discharge load. The current sensor was removed during service.
Could reversing the sensor orientation explain the strategy, and what should be verified before moving it?
Compare the sensor arrow or installation mark with the wiring and service illustration, then check current sign using a controlled load and a charging event. If the reported direction is opposite to the clamp-meter direction, inspect both orientation and wiring. Also confirm the correct battery type and capacity were registered or reset where required.
Variable voltage by itself is normal on a smart system. The contradictory current direction is the useful evidence. Correct the physical installation, perform the specified battery-monitor reset, and observe state-of-charge learning before judging the alternator.
The battery monitoring sensor had been installed backward. After correcting its direction and performing the battery replacement reset, current sign matched the clamp meter and state of charge increased normally. Charging still varied by strategy, but no longer behaved opposite to load.
