Imagine three Corvette placards in a gallery. C6 covers U.S. model years 2005–2013. C7 covers 2014–2019. C8 begins with 2020. The first two place the engine in front and the transaxle at the rear; C8 moves the engine behind the occupants and pairs it with a dual-clutch transmission. That is the historical map. A parts desk still needs body, engine/RPO, transmission, performance variant, brakes, suspension, options and build date.

Generation is easy to admire from across the room. Configuration requires reading the car.

The tour therefore starts like a museum walk and ends like a parts transaction. History establishes the era; labels, RPO data and installed hardware establish the individual car.

Quick answer: U.S. Corvette C6 is 2005–2013, C7 is 2014–2019, and mid-engine C8 starts in 2020; then verify body, engine/RPO, transmission, variant, brakes, and options.

Chevrolet’s own historical material supports those boundaries. C6/C7/C8 are widely accepted shorthand, but a Chevrolet parts record may lead with VIN, model and RPO rather than the enthusiast name.

Separate front-engine from mid-engine

C8 is the fast answer: the cockpit moves forward, the rear body houses the engine and the side intakes become part of the layout. C6 and C7 retain the long-hood front-engine form, but their lamps, body surfaces, rear glass, cabin and controls are distinct enough for a quick visual sort.

Use appearance to choose the likely row, then read the windshield VIN and certification label. Compare title/registration and the NHTSA VIN Decoder with GM build data. A body conversion or track car can imitate another variant without changing the factory identity.

Read body and variant

Record coupe or convertible and the precise factory model: Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR1, E-Ray or another applicable branch. Those names can change body panels, cooling openings, engines, brakes, wheels, suspension and electronics. A badge purchased online proves none of them.

For a coupe, note removable roof-panel and body details relevant to the job. For a convertible, identify generation-specific roof mechanism and hydraulic/electrical equipment. C8 convertible hardware is not an evolution of a C7 part; it belongs to a different architecture.

Decode engine, transmission and RPO

Obtain the GM build/RPO record from the VIN. Record the engine and transmission identifiers, not simply “6.2L V8.” A C6, C7 or C8 model family can contain more than one engine specification across its life and performance versions.

C6 and C7 may use manual or automatic rear transaxles depending on configuration. A standard C8 uses the generation’s dual-clutch architecture, but variant and model-year detail still matter. Photograph labels, casting or component numbers and connectors where accessible. Never infer a transmission from a shift knob on a modified car.

Add brakes, suspension and option evidence

Brake orders need the factory performance package, rotor type/size, caliper identity, wheel and current installed hardware. Suspension work needs standard, magnetic or performance-specific configuration as applicable. Body/electrical work needs camera, sensor, lamp, connector and option information.

RPO data is especially valuable because two visually similar Corvettes can carry different factory equipment. If the RPO/build record and current hardware disagree, keep both lines: “as built” and “as installed.” That preserves the effect of upgrades without rewriting history.

Treat modified cars as evidence conflicts

Corvettes accumulate wings, splitters, wide-body panels, brake kits, wheels, superchargers, exhausts, seats, modules and complete driveline changes. A track-prepared C6 may no longer match a stock catalog at the component level. A C7 dressed like a higher model is still the VIN-defined factory car with installed modifications.

Ask a dismantler for donor VIN, generation, exact variant, body, production date, RPO list and component number. “C7 Z06 style” is appearance language, not donor identity. For electronics, also verify programming and calibration requirements before purchase.

Condition and identity are separate museum labels. A clean low-mileage donor component can still be the wrong variant, and a worn original part can carry the most useful number on the car. Photograph the original before disposal. For rare performance hardware, retain casting, date and option evidence so a supersession or remanufactured replacement can be traced without relying on an owner’s memory of the package name.

Arrive at the parts desk with the full record

A complete description reads: “U.S. 2017 Corvette, C7 coupe, VIN/build and production date verified, factory variant and engine/RPO recorded, transmission, brake and suspension package confirmed, installed part number photographed.” A C8 line should state the mid-engine model/variant and DCT configuration.

The gallery placard gives the car its era. The dossier gives the parts desk enough evidence to work on the individual Corvette rather than the legend.
