How can cam-phaser drain-back be distinguished from a general oil-pressure or timing-chain issue before major disassembly?
Record cold-start oil pressure with a suitable mechanical transducer and capture crank, cam desired and cam actual on both banks from the first revolution. A phaser that loses its parked position often shows one bank moving sharply while base oil pressure and the opposite bank behave normally. Check oil filter anti-drainback function, oil condition and any applicable service procedure before blaming the phaser.
If correlation is stable after the first seconds and the deviation is isolated to one phaser during the noise, document that pattern. Persistent correlation error or slow pressure rise would require a broader chain and lubrication inspection.
