The vehicle lacks power on long grades. Commanded boost rises normally, actual remains 25–30 kPa low and the control command reaches its upper range. A light oil mist surrounds the lower charge-pipe joint, but the pipe looks seated and no split is visible.

Can that joint leak only under engine movement, and how should it be tested without overpressurizing the system?

Support the charge system at the service-specified test points and apply regulated air or smoke below the published limit. Move the pipe gently through its normal engine-roll direction while watching the joint. Inspect the retaining clip, sealing ring and pipe groove; a pipe can appear seated while one clip leg is outside the groove.

Verify the compressor inlet and wastegate only after the charge path holds. Oil mist is not proof by itself, but it is a strong inspection marker on a pressurized joint.

One retaining-clip leg had missed the pipe groove and the seal was cut. The joint leaked only when the engine side was lifted slightly. A new seal and correctly seated clip held pressure, and actual boost tracked within 4 kPa of command.
