2019 Mazda CX-5 battery drains because the liftgate module never sleeps

After two days parked, the battery is low. Current settles to 38 mA, then rises to 310 mA whenever the power-liftgate module wakes. Scan data sometimes shows the latch as “half latched” even though the gate is fully closed. Pressing the gate inward changes the status.

Should latch alignment be corrected before testing the module, or can a failing switch create the same symptom?

Inspect striker alignment and weatherstrip preload, then monitor the latch switch electrically at the module and at the latch. A mechanical adjustment is justified only if the latch does not reach its specified position. If the gate is aligned but the internal switch changes with light housing pressure, the latch is failing.

After any adjustment or repair, cycle the gate several times and perform a full sleep-current test longer than the original wake interval. Do not replace the module simply because it is the component drawing current when another input is waking it.

Alignment measurements were correct, but the half-latch contact opened when the latch housing was tapped. Replacing the latch stabilized the status. Current remained at 32–39 mA for three hours and the battery passed its parked test.
