The dipstick level rises between services and the oil smells of fuel. Most trips are under four miles in cool weather, coolant reaches only about 72°C, and there are no misfire or fuel-pressure codes. Injector balance is even and rail pressure decays normally after shutdown.

How should operating pattern, thermostat performance and possible injector leakage be separated before calling this normal fuel dilution?

Document oil level on the same surface and temperature, then verify actual coolant warm-up against the thermostat specification. Review software updates and service information for the exact VIN. Short trips can increase fuel dilution, but a thermostat that prevents normal temperature or an injector that leaks after shutdown can make it worse.

Use balance, residual-pressure and borescope evidence to assess injectors, and change contaminated oil before extended testing. After correcting any warm-up or software issue, repeat a representative drive pattern and monitor level rather than relying on odor alone.

Coolant measurement confirmed the thermostat was opening early. After thermostat service, the applicable control update and fresh oil, coolant reached 88–92°C on the same commute. The marked oil level remained stable over 1,200 miles.
