How are you using a starter current ramp without overreading one bad-looking peak?

We have a low-amp and high-amp clamp setup for starter analysis. Technicians are comfortable comparing average current, but some are calling compression faults from a single uneven peak without checking battery voltage, engine speed or clamp zero.
What capture setup and cross-checks make the ramp defensible?
Zero the clamp, state its range and direction, sample fast enough to show individual compression events, and capture battery voltage on a second channel. Disable fuel or ignition by the approved method and keep cranking speed consistent. Compare the repeating pattern across several engine revolutions rather than one startup transient.
An uneven current event suggests a cylinder-load difference, not its cause. Confirm it with relative compression, sync to a known cylinder, and mechanical testing where needed. Record battery temperature and state because low voltage changes both current and speed.
Our template now stores clamp range, voltage minimum, RPM and at least six revolutions. A suspected low cylinder disappeared after the clamp was re-zeroed, preventing an unnecessary mechanical estimate. The repeat capture matched compression gauge results on the next real fault.
