Rear O2 indicates lean at cruise while fuel trims remain normal

A 2013 Subaru has P2096 and a rear oxygen sensor that trends lean during steady cruise. Front air-fuel correction and long-term trims stay close to zero, there is no intake leak, and the engine runs smoothly. The rear sensor and heater circuit pass static checks. A faint tick is present only under load.
Could a small exhaust leak between the front and rear sensors explain the disagreement even with no visible soot?
Yes. A leak in that section can draw oxygen into the exhaust pulse and bias the rear sensor without forcing the front fuel-control loop lean. Smoke-test the cold exhaust at low pressure and inspect flange faces, welds and sensor threads. You can also use a pressure transducer or listening probe during a controlled load if the static test is inconclusive.
Confirm the rear sensor responds rich and lean before replacing it. Normal front trims plus a localized leak ahead of the rear sensor is a better explanation than adding fuel to an engine that is already controlling correctly.
Smoke showed at the upper side of the center flange, and the gasket had a narrow burn path with almost no external soot. After the flange was resurfaced and sealed, the rear signal remained stable and P2096 did not return through three monitor cycles.
