A 2008 Escape 2.3 sets P0401. At a steady 2,000 rpm in the bay, the EGR command changes and the valve position follows, but manifold pressure moves less than 1 kPa and engine speed barely reacts. Applying the approved manual command produces the same result. Vacuum supply and valve movement are present.

Does the missing MAP response point to a blocked passage, and how should the valve itself be separated from the intake path?

A functioning EGR flow event should change manifold pressure and combustion stability under the specified test condition. Remove or isolate the valve according to service information and verify that gas can pass through both the exhaust feed and intake entry. Inspect the throttle-body or manifold port, where deposits often remain hidden even when the valve moves.

Do not infer flow from position feedback; it reports actuator movement, not gas volume. Once the path is clean, repeat the same command and compare MAP and RPM response before clearing the monitor.

The valve and exhaust feed were open, but the intake entry behind the throttle body was almost completely carboned shut. Cleaning the specified passage produced a 7 kPa MAP change and a clear RPM response during the same command. P0401 did not return.
