Serpentine Belt Chirp vs Squeal: Finding the Real Cause
A rhythmic chirp often follows pulley rotation. A continuous squeal more often appears when the belt slips under load—but sound descriptions are not a substitute for inspection.

A safe listening test
- Inspect with the engine off: routing, rib seating, cracks, glazing, frayed edges, and fluid contamination.
- Start from a safe position and note whether noise appears at startup, idle, or only with a commanded load.
- Observe tensioner movement from a distance. Excessive oscillation is evidence, not permission to reach closer.
- Switch the engine off before any hands-on check.
- If the service procedure allows belt removal, spin and inspect accessories only with the engine disabled and the routing recorded.
Check alignment
Look for belt tracking near a pulley edge, a tilted tensioner, incorrect spacers, damaged brackets, pulley wobble, or the wrong belt width.
Check load
A binding idler, alternator, compressor, pump, or overrunning pulley can make a good belt noisy. Diagnose the accessory instead of repeatedly replacing the belt.
Never apply belt dressing to modern multi-rib belts unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies it. Contamination can mask evidence and damage the belt.
