Used Car Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
Inspect the car in daylight, start it cold if possible, and write down what you observe. A clean test drive is not a substitute for an independent lift inspection and scan.
Bring
- Flashlight and clean paper towel
- Tire gauge and tread-depth gauge
- OBD-compatible scan tool appropriate for the vehicle
- Phone for photos and notes
- Vehicle history and maintenance records
Body and cabin
- Panel gaps and paint mismatch
- Glass markings and lamp moisture
- Seat belts and warning lamps
- Water stains and unusual odors
- Every switch, key, camera, and lock
Under hood
- Fluid levels and specifications
- Leaks, residue, and fresh cleaning
- Battery age and mounting
- Hoses, wiring, and repair quality
- Cold-start sounds and smoke
Wheels and underside
- Tire match, age, and wear
- Wheel damage and fastening
- Brake surface condition
- Rust, leaks, and impact marks
- Suspension stance and damage
Scan before and after the drive
- Confirm the VIN reported by modules where supported.
- Record stored, pending, and permanent codes in all accessible modules.
- Check readiness monitors. Many incomplete monitors can indicate a recent reset.
- Review battery voltage, temperature plausibility, fuel trims, and other basic data.
- Rescan after the road test and compare.

Use findings to estimate repair priority and total ownership cost, not just to negotiate price. Verify title, recalls, registration, warranty, and local legal requirements through the appropriate official sources.
